Are Braces Painful?

Many people that are worried about getting braces fear potential pain and discomfort.  In most cases the pain is very minimal and never a reason to stop treatment.  Before having braces put on, you will first have spacers put in between your molars to make room for the anchors used in dental braces.   Braces Spacer’s pain is widely known as the worst part of dental braces, since it is such a rapid movement.

Once the spacers come out and braces come on, most orthodontist will not go for the big movements for a few months so that the braces bond to the teeth fully.  Than the process of power chains and such can be used.  While there may be initially some pain the first few days of each adjustment, it is very minor and pain relievers are not even needed.

If you experience large amounts of pain from your braces treatment, we recommend you discuss this with your orthodontist.   It may be a case of trying to correct a bite issue that requires a bit more torque, however the procedure can be slowed down to remedy the pain that initially sets in.

Overall, dental braces are a real breeze and always worth the waiting time for the desired results.  Wear those retainers once you get them off as your teeth are always moving!
