Braces Power chains to Accelerate Braces Treatment

Power chains function just as they promise - these provide that extra power needed to bring your teeth to the desired position.

Your orthodontist will decide if you need power chains or not.  The extra pressure that is necessary to close the gaps in-between your teeth depends on your specific dental problem. Power chains are similar to the arch wire around every bracket, called elastic ligatures. The power chains are positioned in a manner that adds the required extra force in closing the gap between the teeth, and closing the gap only where required. This can happen only through proper planning and precision. Your orthodontist will plan your treatment in advance, and will develop strategies differing from patient to patient. The gap that exists between the teeth and the force required will help your orthodontist decide on the sort of power chain to use.

In case you have a dental structure that is crowded, then it may require extraction of one or more teeth, before power chains are brought into the picture.  It is common for power chains to be left inside your mouth even after your teeth gain the right position.  That will again be decided depending on the progress made in your case.

Power chains come in various colors. Your power chains may be prone o staining especially with coffees and curries. So, choose a smoky color or a silver colored power chain that won't show up bright hues after staining.

Power chains are available in three types.
  • Running continuous
  • Gap power chain
  • Two gap power chain

Your orthodontist will decide on what kind of power chain will suit your needs best.

Just like braces, power chains too will prove uncomfortable and even painful in the beginning. You also may experience some pain and discomfort while the extra pressure is applied to pull your teeth together. Besides, there's the problem of cleaning your braces too.   Take a soft food diet for a few days. This will help mitigate the discomfort.

Your orthodontist will measure the closing of your gap in millimeters and will check for the narrowing of the gap each time you visit him. Cleaning the braces with power chains is not very easy because of the tiny pieces of food debris that tend to get stuck.
