Dental Braces – Different Types Of Braces

Braces that are perceived by some people, as fad of the modern day beauty-conscious teenagers, should give a rethinking, because ancient man wrapped his mal-aligned teeth in braces. There are evidences to show that the ancient man aspired for straight teeth as much as the modern teenager does. However, it was in the 20th century that the braces are redesigned using several materials including platinum, gold, silver, stainless steel, ivory, copper, zinc, vulcanite, rubber and wood. Alloys such as brass were used to make loops or hooks or spurs and form ligatures to bind teeth in one direction.

What are dental braces?
Dental braces are a type of orthodontics and an orthodontist recommends you with braces as part of a treatment to correct abnormalities of teeth and jaws. Braces are small devices that can be fit onto teeth easily and these are aimed to pull the teeth or jaws towards a direction that is desired, meaning they are meant for correcting imperfections of teeth and/or jaws. There are several dental braces recommended and used to correct the teeth and/or jaw positioning. The 2 popular kinds of dental braces used are Damon brackets and the ceramic braces or brackets.

Damon Brackets: These are a modern advancement in the field of orthodontics. The name is after its inventor, dentist Damon Dwight. These brackets use a slide-door technology which help in what is called as self ligation. The bracker allows wire to slide inside the bracket, to reduce friction as well as increase comfortability to the user. These brackets are touted to reduce the treatment time for orthodontic correction.

Ceramic Bracket or Ceramic braces: These are more for the aesthetic-conscious patients, as these cannot be noticed because of the fact that they are transparent or translucent, and compatible with the natural color of the teeth. This gives a nonmetallic look while you still use braces. The ceramic braces are designed so with a technology that they are not discolored with time and usage as well.

Metal Braces: These are the most common type of braces used and a very ecomical option for getting teeth and jaw positioning right.

Clear Braces: These are those orthodontic teeth brackets that are made of pure sapphire; monocrystalline in nature. It means these are almost as transparent as water. But for the arch wire nothing is visible or can be detected. Invisalign is one type of clear braces. The braces are patented and they mean invisble aligners and are not noticed at all.

Orthodontic Retainers: These are orthodontic appliances that are made from plastic and a stainless steel wire is used to hold a person’s teeth in place after the braces are removed. The orthodontic retainer will hold the teeth in position that’s attained with the bracing. However, the time of the retainer usgae depends on individual to individual and it is for the orthodontist to determine that, however, teenagers usually are recommended to retain their retainers until they cross their teens.

So, when you know you have crooked teeth just go to your orthodontist who will suggest you the best braces
