Dental insurance for college students

Healthy, sparkling teeth can do a lot to make your smile more attractive. Unfortunately, the dental treatments that are required to fix your teeth or your smile come with far from attractive prices.  We live in a world where a perfect smile is highly prized, and so dental care is not something you can scrimp on. Dental insurance however helps you deal with the high expenses that come with dental procedures.

It takes time to choose a good dental plan, but once you have signed on for an affordable dental cover plan for college students that include the basics and some of the other treatments that you may require in the course of your college education, you will find that you have one less thing to worry about. With all the pressures of college life, you really don’t want to be stressing about what to do if you're caught on campus with a nagging tooth ache, and have no way of paying the dentist out of your own pocket.

Never mind if you've never had dental problems in your life.  Don’t assume that you are never going to need to visit the dentist during your college years.  Dental problems have a nasty habit of cropping up when you least expect them. Plus, as a student, you're likely to be low on cash many times, and without dental insurance. it could become really hard to deal with dental treatment costs in an emergency.  Moreover, a student dental insurance policy is one of the least expensive dental insurance plans compared with individual or employee dental insurance cover.
Some colleges provide a dental insurance for every student who gains admission to that institution. In such cases, the student may not have the option of choosing another plan even if the other one costs lesser. He has to stick to the college plan.

Evaluate the various student dental insurance plans that are available. As a general rule, there are three main categories of dental insurance cover. This includes major dental care insurance, basic dental care and preventive diagnostic dental care. While most dental insurance cover plans include coverage of preventive and diagnostic care, such as cleaning, checkups etc, the major dental care procedures like dental surgeries, dentures etc. aren’t covered by all plans. Basic dental care procedures like fillings, tooth extractions, fixing chipped teeth etc is included in most dental plans.

Check the extent of coverage on each category of dental treatment that is mentioned in your policy. If in doubt, go ahead and ask your insurer about these.  Insurance policies come cloaked in hard-to-decipher language that can seem vague.  Talk to your advisor, and note down the name of the advisor who advises you about the policy.  The name will come in handy in case of any denial of claims or delayed claims later. Maintain a photocopy of all dental insurance documents for your personal reference.

If you choose a plan from a dental insurance provider, you may be asked to choose a dentist from a list that the insurance provider offers. If you don’t, your dental insurance company will likely deny you coverage. Also, evaluate a dentist based on past records and expertise. Ask others about their references with the dentist. The students, faculty and other staff at your college can be good sources of information.
A dental insurance policy is an agreement between a student and the insurance company to cover the expenses of the student’s dental care if the necessity for such care arises.  That fact remains constant irrespective of whether the student can choose to have dental insurance, or it is mandatory for the student to have insurance in order to enroll into a particular educational institution.

College students must manage the risks to their dental health, and keep expenses to a minimum by practicing good dental hygiene and eating a good, balanced, low sugar diet. Cut down on smoking, and limit the alcohol at all those frat parties.
