Dental Insurance for Self Employed

If you are a self employed individual, than having healthcare insurance is very important to carry.   You always hear horror stories of how the successful businessman ended up in the emergency room after his appendix burst.   Without insurance a burst appendix can cost you up to fifty thousand dollars!   Just staying over night in a hospital can run you close to ten thousand dollars per day.

While many business owners have heard the shocking stories of not carrying insurance and no one plans on getting appendicitis anytime soon, they still don t carry health insurance because they just think they don t need it.

While health insurance is much more mandatory than dental insurance, one should also consider dental coverage depending on the situation.  It is wise for a business owner with children to have a family dental plan that covers their spouse and children.

Dental insurance coverage for the self employed is often much cheaper than full health insurance coverage and there are some considerations you may want to review before opting for dental insurance:

  • Do I Plan To Have Braces On Anytime Soon?
If you are planning on having braces, than dental insurance to cover portions of your braces treatment are available.  You will want to shop around and ask you provider on the coverage available.   Some dental insurance providers only cover certain types of braces so be sure to inquire based on the type of braces you are considering.
  • Are My Teeth In Good Health?
If you have a long history of good teeth health, than it is possible that being a cash patient maybe better for you.   Getting a cleaning at the dentist every six months may run you about seventy-five dollars.   X-rays, fillings, etc. will get pricy.   But if you have a good record of dental health and take very good care of your teeth, than paying cash might be a good option for you.
  • Do You Smoke or Drink A Lot Of Coffee?
Smokers and coffee consumers tend to have more dental health issues than non users.  Having dental insurance may be a wise decision in the long term.
As a self employed business owner dental insurance may not be top priority.  You may decide to just be a cash patient and take advantage of coupons and advertisements when getting a dental cleaning.   Either way it is very important to get your health insurance in check first as we have seen to many examples of how an emergency room visit depletes your funds quickly.  There are many health and dental insurance plans available specifically fit for business owners that are usually less expensive payments with a higher deductible.   It is always a good idea to talk to your dentist about you situation.
