Dental Tooth Veneers

Revamping That Good Ol’ Smile

Tooth veneers are thin, semi-translucent tooth-shaped covering that are specifically made of either porcelain or dental composite material substances. It is adhered over the teeth to hide obvious tooth imperfections; diastemas; damaged and stained teeth; and to improve the teeth’s shape, color, length, and size. It is a major conservative procedure that gives long-lasting dental cosmetic changes for the purpose of enhancing particularly the “smile zone” and revamps that good ol’ smile.

Compared to the crown or the white fillings, the procedure is specifically an approach to a more aesthetic smile, requiring only a removal of a small amount of the tooth enamel to give the tooth a natural-looking appearance with little or no discomfort. Not only that they’re cheaper alternative to having crowns, they’re also stain free and beautiful. It is guaranteed that even the almost unnoticeable change can make a great deal of difference in how you look and feel.

The procedure usually involves at least two dental appointments. The first visit can take a couple of hours. The teeth are examined; shades are taken to match your teeth color; discussions regarding the design of the smile, teeth’s shape and size and the restrictions. Then the teeth are prepped, buffed for the fit, and impression is done. The second visit is for fitting and checking the shape and color. This phase is very critical because this is the only time that you can make changes, if any. Once bonded, they can no longer be altered.

Some things to note and consider about the tooth veneer is that you may be doing a partial or complete “overhaul” of the front teeth, so it is important to make sure that a significant amount of the tooth enamel is still intact. Once the veneers are bonded over the teeth, even if it only has to replace a small amount of the tooth surface, they are not the types of treatment that can be reversed or altered. Even if they are a substitute to crowns or dental composite resin filling, it is required that you have no malocclusions and the teeth are healthy as these veneers are also good for modifying the shape of the teeth and improve the appearance of an underbite, but not to correct like the braces do, but they certainly give straightaway results. The period of adjustment takes about two weeks, soon enough to get used to the “new” teeth. Some sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures may be experienced, but that usually go away in four to six weeks.

Depending on how you care for your teeth, or how you go about dental hygiene, durability is between four to ten years. Remember, dental veneers are just reasonable replications of your natural teeth; they are not arrant alternates. It is advisable to pay your dentist a visit at least a couple of times a year for regular dental examinations and cleanings. Your veneers can chip off; so if you have the bad habit of biting the nails, using your teeth as can openers, or chewing on non-food, discard them to avoid dental problems or trauma later on.
