Different Types Of Braces and Orthodontics

Dr. Wolfson's Dental Diary
A tooth fell out, and left a space
So big my tongue could touch my face.
And every time I smile, I show
a space where something used to grow.
I miss my tooth as you can guess
But then, I have to brush one less!

Orthodontics used to be limited to the placement of metal brackets that were bonded to the teeth, and arch wires that were threaded through the brackets. The arch wires were periodically tightened, and acted as a track used to guide each tooth to its proper position, closing spaces and straightening crooked teeth. Today there are more choices that this traditional metal track available to consumers, including ceramic "tooth-colored" braces, clear plastic braces, and a system called "Invisalign" which uses clear trays to realign teeth and close spaces. Your Dentist/Orthodontist can let you know if you are a candidate for these new optopns.  Some patients, especially adults, are willing to invest more time into treatment in exchange for more aesthetic tooth movement. Dr. Wolfson provides these services and more at all his offices in Manhattan, the Bronx and Westchester County, NY.

Traditional Metal Braces

Generally this is the most economical option, traditional metal braces may also be required for those needing extensive realignment. This is often the option chosen for children who are less self-conscious and share the need for treatment with their peers.

Ceramic "Tooth Colored" Brackets

Ceramic brackets are translucent, so they blend in with your natural tooth color. This means that unlike traditional stainless metal braces, ceramic braces won’t make your smile look "metallic." In addition, ceramic braces are designed so that they won't stain or discolor over long periods of time. These and clear braces are often the choice of teens and young adults.

Clear Braces

With these "clear" braces the brackets are made of pure monocrystalline sapphire, which makes these brackets practically see-through. Only  the arch wire is visible. The procedure and treatment time are comparable to all metal, but the aesthetics are better.  Complicated or extensive misalignments may not find thiss option appropriate.  As with most treatment, only you and your Dentist can determine if this choice is viable for you.

"Invisalign"

The closest thing to invisible braces currently available is the Invisalign® system. The patented Invisalign® trays straighten teeth effectively, yet are virtually unnoticeable.  A succession of custom cler trays are provided that move the teeth into position invisibly.  Invisalign certified Dentists provide you with this affordable service, and again, the viability of this particular treatment option is determined by your Dentist and you.
