There are disadvantages to braces that some may view as very minute, however for some people they are enough for them to avoid getting their teeth fixed and thus making invisible braces such as Invisalign very popular.

Here are some of the disadvantages of braces:

  • Food can get stuck in the brackets.
  • Keeping good oral hygiene can be more difficult especially flossing.
  • You cannot eat certain foods such as hard candy, tough meats, etc.
  • Your teeth may become stained in certain cases from the bracket
  • You will have to go to your orthodontist usually once a month for adjustments which can lead to a couple day of minor discomfort.
  • You may develop a temporary lisp when having appliances such as the palatal expander in conjunction with braces.
  • Your lips may get cut up.
  • Playing sports will require a mouthguard.
  • Your physical appearance will be different.
  • Your weight could go down due to eating less of your accustomed foods.
