Edge To Edge Bite

When a person has the upper and lower teeth meet in the front, it is said that the bite is “edge to edge”.  In most cases this is a slight underbite, but many users determine this not severe enough to require surgery or even braces.

We highly recommend that a person with an edge to edge bite seek the consultation of several orthodontists.  Many doctors will say that you may need surgery, but with proper treatment via braces and elastics an edge to edge bite can be corrected and see dramatic results.

Traditional metal braces are best for the job as a lot of movement needs to take place and the durability and strength of metal braces is needed for the job.  In some cases the upper jaw is smaller than the lower jaw and a palatal expander will be utilized first.  Usually with widening the upper jaw it will come forward and eliminate the edge to edge bite right away.  Braces are then used to weak the midline and straightening of the teeth.

Remember that post braces you will need to wear your retainer.  It is even more important for users that had bite correction as teeth can move post braces and only the slightest movement can cause your bite to be uncomfortable.  We can never stress enough on this site to wear retainers as directed by your orthodontist.
