My Invisalign Journey (aka my 2nd time around with braces)

Tray 11

Rate this Entry
Well, it's gonna happen: I'm slated to get elastics down the road. My ortho just confirmed with me today. I asked about the precision cuts on my lower trays and asked him if it meant I was getting elastics. He said that he had planned for elastics just in case my canines weren't moving the way he liked. So far, they're tracking well. However, he said once my trays have pushed my teeth out far enough to make room, we're using the elastics to help pull the canines in line.

He also said if my teeth keep tracking as well as they are, I'm looking at between 10 to 15 trays of refinements. He's hoping for the low end. He also said that my last 3 trays are over-correction trays, so I may never wear sets 22, 23 & 24. Once I hit tray 18, he'll want to see me more often to gauge what he wants to do and determine when I'll start refinements. He was telling me about a patient who had 42 sets of trays for round one and his refinements ended being 35 trays when he got the clincheck back!! He said they cut it down to about 22 after he made some changes, but...wow! Could you imagine going through that many trays and having nearly as much in refinement? I think I'd cry!!! I made the comment that Mother Nature doesn't watch the clincheck and he said "I wish more patients would realize this! I can say I want your teeth to move a certain way, but it doesn't mean they will". He spent nearly an hour with me this time (I also had my 6 month teeth cleaning before he came in the room). He said since my halfway point is Tray 12 and I was there to pick up trays 11, 12 & 13, he didn't want to make me come back in 2 weeks for another visit. I asked a ton of questions and it was a GREAT visit!

On another note, my son has been finishing his school year out in Chicago. I moved to MI after I got married in the fall. I didn't want to make him move right at the beginning of school in his 8th grade year. So, I let him stay there with his dad to finish out school with his friends. He's moving out here in 2 weeks...YAY!!! It's been a LOT of driving back & forth (3 hours) and lots of train rides on the Amtrak. It will be great not to have to travel so much!!!

He has metal braces and his ortho is taking his braces off and putting him retainers to send him out here to MI. My ortho is going to take over his case. He said he prefers Invisalign and would like to do Invisalign Teen since he's 14. We'll see...I'm still worried that he won't be responsible enough to care for his teeth properly with Invisalign. We're going on July 17th for his ortho visit (and I'll pick up trays 14, 15 & 16!). My doc did say that if I strongly feel he won't take care of the Invisalign, he'll do the metal braces. I'm still on the fence about it...

Hope everyone's summer is going along well. Classes start back up tomorrow, so I'm back to the grind again. It's been great having 2 weeks off. I just bought my textbooks for nursing school. 50 POUNDS of textbooks!!! My main text alone weighs 20 pounds! Good thing I've got a book bag with wheels on it!!

50 pounds of text books. So much for a paperless world we live in. lol. Elastics have been a non issue for me and like mos,t I even forget they are there, along with the aligners. I have even forgot I have the metal brackets now. until I get the odd poke from the wire. Sounds like everything else is going well for you. Good luck with your future progress.

I usually prefer an actual text to an e-book, but with 19 books for ONE class, I'm almost wishing they'd give us an iPad with all the books on it. I'm still cringing at the fact that I'm going to have to eventually READ all this material over the course of 16 weeks. EEEEEK!

Your teeth are looking great after 11 trays... the crowding in the front has really straightened out. Nice! And you're not even halfway through the treatment. The early improvement is significant.

We have around the same number of trays (I have 25), and I am really hoping for significant early improvement as I'm getting married next year and doing a photo shoot at the end of the year. So I would really like my teeth to look good by the midway/two-third way through the treatment. Fingers crossed!!

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! I just got married last August, looking forward to our first anniversary this summer :) If you've got a year to go until your wedding, you should have lots of noticeable improvement by then!

Ah wow, they're looking so much better!

How bad are your sons teeth? I highly doubt a younger teenager will handle invisalign, i only finished school 3 years ago and i couldn't imagine doing invisialign at school. University was hard enough!

Thanks, Thomas_9! Since he's had metal braces for a year & a half, they aren't too bad. I agree...I think it would be better if he kept the metal braces. I don't think he'd do the maintenance for Invisalign.
