Well I've been waiting a month now for the braces thing to get started.

I first went to the ortho almost two months ago and physically signed all the paper work & put down my deposit about a month ago. Then I had to go find a normal dentist to do the extractions.

I've had to wait for an appointment with the dentist for the extractions...so the earliest I could get was a month from my initial dentist check-up. Although, this is partly my fault as because I'm a massive wimp I'm going IV sedation for the extractions and so had to wait till the anaesthetist was free for the appointment. It also means the cost goes up by about $1000!! To make matters worse the stupid dentist has found 4 fillings and fissures I need as well....so my dentist bill alone is about $2,500

I have my appointments books for April 12th for extractions/fillings and then the first lot of braces will go on April 16th. They haven't said which ones will go on first top or bottom.

What I'm having done & why I chose it:

Ceramic on the bottom (I don't know if these are the Damon ones or not yet) and lingual on the top.
I chose this because I have a lot of crowding on the bottom and I have crowding and buck teeth on the top, and after a meeting with the ortho & talking about time scales and the amount of moving and shuffling needed I came up with a cunning plan. If lingual takes longer than normal ceramics then I can have lingual on the top cause they don't need to do as much 'shuffling' Then if I have normal ones on the bottom for the full time they would be finished at roughly the same time? This therefore meant I could have braces without 'seeing' them on the top - and reduce costs by having the normal 'front of the teeth' ones on the bottom (although I have paid more for ceramic not metal). This also made me happy about going forwards with braces as I am pretty scared about how I will look.

It's funny that so many people who get braces are concerned about the way they will look when they have them on - as if they don't already look stupid now with wonky teeth (And i can say 'stupid' because I have wonky teeth )

So I'm approx two weeks out and getting nervous. I've stocked up on codeine pills and tonight I'm going to buy some cans of tomato soup and make a little 'travel tooth kit' for work and around the place (as I've seen described on this site). I'm preparing people at work & friends about the change coming, because I'm worried people will look at me strangely in a 'there is something different but I wonder what?!' and I want people to know so if/when I start talking funny or am high on codeine or am in pain they will know/understand.

I don't know if this is what everyone else does to prepare, maybe I'm going over the top! I wonder if there is anything else I need?

I've PM'd you with a little advice. I agree with your "wonky teeth" remark! I personally think I look way cuter with braces. And it shows ppl that I'm at least getting my wonky teeth fixed!

I was told I look cute with braces today!! You are right. I am proud of my braces. I show them to everybody, but I never showed anyone my bare teeth. We should be proud of ourselves for wanting to better ourselves. Don't worry about the extractions. I just had 4 and it wasn't too bad. I got it done under general anastesia as well. Just remember to try and put something in your stomach afterwards so that you are not nauseas. I was very sick because of all the pain meds and empty stomach. I barely had any mouth pain from it. Good luck!

Hi guys, I know its silly to be nervous but it's natural I guess. I've got an update in my next blog - things havent gone so well. I had the local GP tell me I was crazy for paying extra for ceramics and lingual on the top she asked me why - all I could come up with was 'vanity'...which I guess is true. I'm self conscious of my mouth & teeth and I want to fix it, but why feel worse (potentially) by having them on the outside if I can afford to have them on the inside and can justify the extra time....
