Dumbest Braces Moment EVER

So...

Back in December I posted about having a small gap between my teeth on the left hand side. I saw my ortho on Wednesday and mentioned the gap to his assistant while she was setting up my files and things.

He came in, she mentioned the gap and he looked "I don't see a gap," he says.

"What!?" I ask and tongue the spot to make sure it hasn't closed on the ride over.

"Can you point it out to me?" he asked nicely.

So of course I poke it with my tongue and wait while he says the gap isn't really a gap since the teeth touch in the back and moves over his mirrors and lights.

....turns out....

Ready?

I got a PECAN FRAGMENT stuck between the two teeth and it was keeping them from moving closer!!!

*HEAD DESK*

Apparently its been there for a while (although wasn't there when I went in December or had my cleaning 3ish weeks ago) because he had to use his curved tool to poke it out then give me a mini-cleaning while I sat there with the reddest face!

I swear I've been flossing - lets face it the teeth with the gap are the easiest and get flossed first in Braces Land! I must have been pushing it down further and flossing over it all this time.

So yeah... LOL

He removed the power chains on the left side of my mouth so the gap could fully go away. Then I got silver .... gosh Sandy said what they were called a few months ago ... its a thin wire wound around my teeth to keep them from moving more on the front and right side of my top braces since that side of my bite is perfect.

I'm happy to say the gap seems to be closing in the last two days. I had some discomfort yesterday because the removal of the chain and only partial figure 8s shifted a bite that hadn't felt significant movement since last summer but it seems to be lined up now.

So the moral of the story is - when in braces and with gaps stay away from the 3 month's supply of white chocolate chip and pecan cookies your roomy baked for Christmas.

*sigh*

Life is hard ;)

I went to see my dentist for a cleaning. Aren't they awful with braces? I always end up with a face full of sprinkled water *roll eyes*

He was very excited to see my progress and said it looks like I'm almost done being braced. On the downside my gums were randomly swollen on cleaning day (idk why) so he told me to rinse with warm water and salt for a day or two until they go back to normal.

Of course swollen gums + braces + thorough dentist meant I did a tiny bit of bleeding through the cleaning process but nothing major.

I look forward to this being my last cleaning in braces though, they are so uncomfortable!

ACK! My ortho says my braces may come off next month ALREADY! The tops have been on for a little over a year but I am so attached to these things :(

I do have a gap on the left side next to an incisor. Pre-braces I had a gap between my front teeth and during the bracing process it has migrated around my mouth. I got another power band on the top (the bottom metal bands stayed put this month) and the ortho said the band will probably close the gap this month.

I don't think so because this will be the 3rd time I get the bands and the gap has only migrated without actually closing. Maybe I'll end up with one of those spring looking things to draw the teeth together?

Who knows?

Having the braces come off has me quasi-nostalgic. I miss flossing the "easy" way but they really feel like an extension of me. In a strange way during this past year they've become a part of my identity and I'll be sad to see them go :/

Totally weird huh?

I came prepared with a small pocket mirror so I could check my teeth without having to run into the bathroom and fake incontinence all night ;)

How were your meals?

Look at that - I got my braces exactly one year ago today! :clapping:

Its honestly been the best investment I've ever made. I love my braces and give the biggest smiles. My confidence and aversion of shredded meat have both skyrocketted.

I've learned
- that bottom braces are the worst things in the world.
- just how small rice grains can be.
- that other people can totally see you tounging braces after a meal
- to appreciate flossing
- to revere power brushes
- that silver bands on white ceramic look silly
- to listen to my ortho
- the importance of straws when drinking stainy bevs
- to love bagels after a tightening
- to pimp braces to anyone who asks
- to love my smile :lips:

I've been highly MIA from...everything! Back in September I took advantage of JetBlue's All You Can Jet promotion where you could fly anywhere in the country for a month for only $599. I went to Seattle, Portland, LA, Chicago and New Orleans. Then I came home (a girl needs to do laundry) and left two days later to visit my parents in Dominican Republic for roughly a month.

Yes, I'm unemployed ;)

Also, because of my travelling I missed two ortho appointments in a row and went in to see him today. I hadn't been adjusted since August and had managed to snap 3 (yes three) of my bottom powerchain links. I don't want to say too much but if anyone here is offered Nature Valley Nut Clusters - JUST SAY NO!

As punishment for my negligence (although worded as a precaution against future mishap) I got stuck with a metal powerchain on the bottom teeth :(

The tops got a plastic powerchain and the pressure has been intense. One tooth has managed to sit back and refuse movement for the past year but this chain is whipping it into position! Unfortunately you guys know pressure on one tooth means pressure on three neighbors so my mouth is not so happy right now.

The top back rotaty teeth are still rotating. The ortho didn't swap out the chain (or remove it as I'd hoped) so that's a good sign. It feels like they're facing the right direction but I'm not the expert here!

So that's what's been going on in my life (and mouth). I got an e-mail that I got third place in a blogging contest back in September which makes me feel like a braces blogging slacker! A belated thank you to the admins :lips:
