Thirty with Braces

First night with top and bottom braces

Last night was my first night with bottom braces. I took an Excedrin PM before sleep to make sure the pressure wouldn't keep me up. I also "waxxed" the bottoms but not the tops.

Waxxing is kind of a pain. The little wax tube needs to be flattened and pressed over the brace, giving me a funny shaped face. I also missed the back part on the left side so the inside of my gums there are a bit sore. Last time it took me about a week to become desensitized to the braces so I'm expecting the same now.

My bottom braces continue feeling "pressured" but nothing localized. My top front right tooth feels sore which means its moving. I LOVE that feeling! When I first got the top braces I'd constantly check on sore teeth and was shocked by how quickly they moved.

Since my top teeth were pretty bad (I need to post pictures later) there was a lot of movement the first few days. The braces wire dipped up and down over a few teeth. The bottom braces only have one dip near a side tooth so I'm not expecting miraculous changes.

When I was brushing last night I was admiring how stain resistant the ceramic braces are. Even though I've had the top braces since November (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, St. Patty's and more Pepsi than I should consume) they are the exact same shade as the brand new bottom braces.

I need to call my dentist about the "bumping bottom brace to back of top teeth" issue but he's not in today. I guess I'll just be extra careful chewing until I see him next!

Great your first night went well!

Ceramic brackets rarely stain, but changes in lig colours can sometimes make them appear like they have. An older type of plastic tooth coloured bracket did stain, and has sadly affected how some people think about the stain resistent qualities of ceramic.

    Good luck with your progress!

Great that you made it past the first day fully braced.
The ceramic braces don't stain, but the ligatures do.

    Hope you see progress soon.

I can't wait to see pictures

it's interesting that you got ceramic on the bottom. my ortho told me i was getting metal and this seems to be what most orthos (that i've read about) do because of the risk to chipping either tooth or bracket. Strange how everyone does things differently.

Ceramic brackets on the lower teeth are fine, as long as there's no risk of the upper teeth coming into contact with them. Most ortho's will use ceramic on the lowers once they've been able to confirm this. There are a few ortho's, I'm sure, who still use metal only on the lowers, just in case ... but this number is decreasing.

I didn't realize chipping on ceramic bottoms was a concern...they definitely do come in contact with the upper teeth though *worries*

To be honest, I've just been going by what the dentist says/does without really researching beforehand. I know this makes me a bad patient
