Day 2... has arrived and the pain has minimally subsided (keeping in mind I have not taken medication either). While at work today I rinsed several times with mouthwash to ease the rubbing of my brackets against my cheeks. The mouthwash did provide me with temporary relief. Wax is good but I would like my mouth to become somewhat resistant to the brackets.

I am very excited to share that I have discovered drinking hot water is soothing to sore gums and teeth.

I desperately want to floss my teeth but they are still too sore. I would like to wait another day or two before I floss and hope this will not adversely affect my teeth, any thoughts. I do brush about six times a day (sometimes even more).

I have received nothing but compliments on the decision to correct my overbite. I have proudly shown my braces to all who asked to see . My staff and colleagues have questioned our agency's dental plan and how they too can enter into orthodontic treatment!

Again, I cannot thank all of you enough for your positive feedback and am rather pleased at the discussion which has been generated.

    Thanks for the tips.

I remember not flossing for a few days after I got braces and nothing really happened.

    Good luck.

Honda ... wax is the best way to toughen your mouth. While wearing wax, it rub against your skin and toughens it. The wax is smooth and will not cause sores, whereas the brackets have edges and can cause sores. If you get sores, new cells are formed to do the healing and the toughening process begins again. Please don't think not using wax helps toughen, as that's an 'old wives tale'.

I'm sure not flossing for a few days won't damage your gums, but brushing 6+ times a day might. Try flossing gently between the teeth that aren't sore and hopefully it won't be long till you're able to do all your teeth. Plus by flossing some teeth, you'll get used to flossing with braces ... which always takes longer for quite a few weeks/months. Flossing in the early days of braces can be annoying, but I've found the time it takes to be the most annoying part. I think to begin with it took me around 20 minutes just to floss. It was weeks before I got to 10 mins and I reckon a year maybe till I finally got to 5 mins or less.

Be gentle when brushing and careful if you brush near your gums. You're better to rinse your mouth with water and to use a tooth pick if any food is stuck, and brush after your main meals, if you need to.

It's wonderful that you're getting other people interested in the idea of having their bites corrected ... wow ... that's amazing! In nearly 3 1/2 years, my having braces has barely been mentioned by anyone who's not involved with orthodontics.

Here's to a great day three!
