16 days and counting - I feel like a kid. I have a deep impinging overbite that has resulted in TMJ and several trips to the dentist to repair my front upper and lower teeth. Physiotherapy and Orthodontists recommendations have confirmed braces may be the only longitudinal means to correcting the problem. So here I am 16 days and counting to when I will have my self-ligating braces placed. I simply can't wait!

Great that you're able to have your bite corrected BracedHonda ... and only 38 years ... lucky you!

Take great care of your mouth and be prepared for it to take a little longer to floss ... but it's worth it, to keep your gums healthy for the outcome of a great bite!

Best advice I was given ... rinse with warm salt water as often as you can to keep your mouth feeling good. Plus the warm salt water helps with soothing and healing the skin in our mouths.

The second best was ... use wax as soon as you feel anything rubbing. This way the wax will toughen the area, without any sore developing. Plus ... wear wax when eating, and use it for 24 hours after you're sure the area is fine. I did this a couple of times and have only needed wax when a wire has come loose.

All the best as you prepare for your big day!

Thank you for the warm welcome. I am a professional and would opt to wear the clear braces if they were not so expensive. My question is whether the metal self-ligating braces are small and relatively unnoticeable?

Self ligating brackets come in a range of sizes, the same as other metal brackets. Most people will not notice them, and those that do, will get over it quickly. The best thing for you to do is to not draw attention to them, and the way to do that, is to act as if nothing has changed. The worst thing to do ... and the way to draw attention to your braces, is covering your mouth.

A disadvantage of small brackets, is that they are more pokey and can cause more discomfort ... meaning it can take longer to get used to them. Where I work, we go for a middle of the range sized metal bracket and they're great. Our ceramic brackets are provided free of charge for the upper 'social six', an option taken by most of our clients.

I was just curious what the differential between getting clear braces (invisalign?) and traditional braces in Regina was. When I looked around in Edmonton, there wasn't a difference and depending on the ortho/dentist, sometimes it was cheaper to go with clear braces.

    good luck with your treatment!

Lemon tree there are many things that invisalign can't do, and many people are not suitable candidates for this treatment.

In Australia and New Zealand a good qualified invisalign provider will charge more for treatment, due to the cost of the company providing the videos, aligners and other bits and pieces.

The only clear braces ... onces that can't be seen ... are braces on the lingual side of your teeth. They're usually more expenses than other types, mostly due to the work that goes into bonding them and they can take a little longer to work with at adjustments.

Good luck finding what you want and what's best for you.

haha... i guess i'm still new to all of the terminology. I always think of lingual braces as invisible and invisalign as clear. it's kind of funny because i'm usually a bit picky about how people use terms and you've caught me doing the same! good catch!

When I first started looking into braces all I could find was this site called archwired - adults who wear braces. Something happened on the site and people couldn't post their stories anymore and I decided to look elsewhere. That's when I found this site and am so glad I did. There is tons of support here, for which I am grateful. I am anxiously counting down the days to when I will have my braces applied - January 21.

I am hoping this will be the end of my deep overbite, TMJ and continuous headaches!

I do have one more question which seems rather silly but it is still worth asking. I have an appointment with a hygienist two days prior to having the braces placed. Is there any reason why I should not go through with the hygienist appointment?
  9. Sunny's Avatar
No reason at all ... in fact it's a great idea to see your hygienist before your b-day. This means your teeh will be clean, your gums checked, plus you can ask your hygienist for any tips re brushing, flossing etc, once you have braces.

It's important to have excellent oral hygiene, as the area under the bonding will stay the same shade as the day it's applied ... so it's all about keep the rest of the tooth that clean!

Questions are good ... and this forum is a great place to ask them and you'll get a variety of advice from the people who visit her regularly.

All the best with your preparations for 21 January. I recommend you put a small container of 'cleaning gear' together, so that you can have that with you when you eat away from your home. Things like a purse sized mirror, travel sized toothbrushes, travel sized toothpaste, tooth picks and/or interdental brushes, floss (the type with the stiffened end) and a container or two of wax. When you've use a wax container, it's a good idea to clean it, as it will come in handy to carry some spare elastics in, should you need them during treatment.

    Hope that helps!

Bracedhonda--notice you were an Archwired person too, I loved it..back in October when I got my consult I was on there, and then just as I get my braces actually on---you can't post on there anymore!! I was very disappointed, and thought---now how am I going to get through this?? It is a huge help to hear from everyone and read stories. I love it, can't wait to talk to you all! Right now I am trying to get down some rice and baked beans while sitting at my desk at lunch---along with my handy dandy mirror that sits on my desk! LOL You never know!! Good luck everyone, I'll be here for a while!!!

I just received a call from my orthodontist. Apparently they have rescheduled my appointment to this coming Tuesday. Looks like my b-day has changed! I am so excited to have this deep overbite corrected. I better get my daughter to take some before pictures.

    Fantastic news BracedHonda!

The best photos to compare your progress with are ... front bite, left side bite, right side bite and your upper and lower arches.

Have a great day on Tuesday!

I added some pictures for you to view to see the deep impinging bite with mild crowding. My daughter missed one side. I will have to get her to take another picture tomorrow.
