HI! Im new here, and new to braces. I just had a couple of questions for the people who have been in the Braces Game for a little longer...

My story: I had 4 extractions because of crowding before the big day. I have ceramics on the top and bottom. Some clear ligatures. I just wanted little attention as possible!
Anyway so far im just wonderingggg----

1. Besides that sonicare toothbrush my dentist advertises like he gets a cut if he sells one, are there any comparable toothbrushes, not as expensive, that work well with these brackets?

2. How in the world do I floss? can this process be any harder??

3. Toothpaste you guys have found helpful, preventing cavitites, all that good stuff.

THANKS!!!
I made a video.. click the link to watch

I don't know an answer to number 1 sorry...

    2. Flossing is tricky with braces. You can try Oral B Superfloss, there are other types... sorry I don't know the names. Also you can use a floss threader.

I don't have an answer to 3 sorry...

    Great video Breeze.Eey!

Toothbrush ... the best kind for you, is the one you like to use and find easiest to clean all the surfaces of your teeth and brackets. Where I work, we recommend oral B electric because of the small brush head, plus the use of a childs soft brush for manual use. The small soft heads allows you to get around the brackets and under the wires without damaging them ... as long as you're careful. Interdental brushes are the best for brushing under the archwires and keeping that area clean.

Flossing is easy ... but you need to practise at it. Most ortho's have staff who show you how to floss, so if you don't understand how it's done ... please ask at your first adjustment. We recommend our patients us Oral B superfloss and thread the tiny stiffened end between the teeth at the gum, or under the archwire and then gently floss up and down each side, remove and move to the next ... etc. Flossing is very important for your gums ... which are important for the health of your teeth. Please make sure you're flossing properly. Here's a site where you can choose to watch a video that shows how to floss when you have braces ... click here.

Toothpaste ... the best type is one with fluoride, but apart from that, it's whatever you like. I use two ... one for sensitive teeth ... Sensodyne with whitening, and my most favourite, Colgate with baking soda and peroxide.

    Good luck with your treatment!

    Hi Breeze.EEY,

The flossing is tricky and seems to take ages in the beginning, but it gets quicker with practice. The Oral B Superfloss was the type of floss my ortho recommended, and it works well. The only thing is, if your teeth are extremely close together, like some of mine were when I started treatment, it can tend to shred a little. Glide Threader Floss is another good brand; it's a little more expensive than the Superfloss, but is smoother.

With toothpaste, I've had good results with the Crest Sensitivity with Whitening, but as Sunny said, it's more of a personal preference.

    Good luck to you!
