Well...after a horrid day yesterday and practically gagging at my 100th helping of mash potato last night I awoke at 3am sat in the kitchen and sobbed big fat hot tears for my poor sore mouth, my new ulcer...wax was applied religiously but well, who knows... and for my tender teeth.
Enough was enough, straight on the phone to my Ortho this morning. I am to do the following... Take Zinc supplements, for bone re-growth and to treat Ulcer. Vit B complex for energy and Cell renewal. It seems I may be deficient which is why I am feeling so rubbish-veggies BEWARE, teeth movement takes a lot out of you so he tells me. So I will try it and let you know how it goes. xxxx

    Fantastic Bunny!

Most people don't have a problem with teeth movement, but there are always a few who do. Also if your diet is deficient, possibly as a result of you not eating properly since getting braces, this can upset the balance of how your body works and make you feel rotten. Which is why I commented like I did on your entry yesterday.

A blood test next time you go to your see your doc might be a good idea.

Being a veggie is not the problem ... I can assure you of that. It's all about what you eat and how often you eat it.

I'm pleased you took things under control and did something. Feeling sad and sorry for ourselves doesn't actually achieve anything, but getting something sorted does help to get us back on top, which is where we should be!

Good for you and here's to you feeling loads better very soon!

Thanks Sunny! I know its not being a veggie thats the issue, I have been one for 18 years now. I think its been a long old slog what with having extractions prior to my fitting so I havent been eating normally for a while. However I hope to get back on track soon. Thank you for your kind words. xxxx

    Hey Bunny,

I was about to make a post on the same problem - weight loss due to braces.. Today I saw some people that I havent seen for 3 months or so and guess what was the first thing they told me - " oh you are skinny now! what s going on?". I 've tried so hard not to lose weight, even bought a blender! obviously, milk shakes don't work so well I think I lost weight after my teeth extraction. before that I had metal braces on my lower teeth and was able to keep the weight, but after the extraction and after putting braces on top I felt I have lost it. I work out twice a week and wonder whether I should stop it for a while to gain some weight. On the other hand, I dont want to give up on sports because of it... but neither can I eat more - it s physically difficult for me and takes so much time! oh well, lets hope it s temporal and I ll search for some weight gaining recipes hold on!

^^have you tried meal replacement shakes? I was concerned about weight loss with invisalign too but actually ended up going in the opposite direction (see blog entry here)

^I don't think you need to give up exercise in order to maintain a healthy weight with braces nor is losing weight inevitable. I know this may be redundant but I really do believe that there are healthy ways to compensate for the lost calories (soft foods, shakes, eating more often or larger meals), just a matter of finding a way to enjoy food again that works for you.

    take care

Jul I don't think you should give up your exercise routine, instead you need to work at sorting your eating out.

Meal replacement shakes, like lemon tree suggests is one idea, plus talk to your trainers about what you can do, as often they know of products that can help.

Frequent small meals is another way to help your weight. Most important is eating the way you did before you started orthodontic treatment.

Weight lost due to having extractions/braces isn't good for the body, as it's only temporary, due to the reason the weight was lost, not being a continuing thing. This means that for most people, when the weight goes back on, it goes on plus more. So make sure you take good care of your health.

Also talk to your ortho about your weight concerns, as ortho's want patients to be in peak health, as health affects how well teeth move and how their patients cope with treatment.

    Good luck!

Jul...OMG, you have posted the same concerns I have, I run often...well I did before my extraction etc and am afraid to now as frankly I do not want to lose any further weight or collapse mid run through so little calorie intake. So I am going to try the supplements and re-jig my diet if I can...I will let you know how I get on. Hang in there 2! xxxxxxx

Thanks for the advice, ladies! What is really curious is that I have my hip and waist measurements for the last 3 months and it turns out the I gained one cm both in the waist and hips as compared to the previous month. I wonder why then I look thinner than before? Can it be only the face that lost some fat in the cheeks?
I havent tried commercial milk replacement shakes but here s the one I make in my blender: one cup of milk, one banana, one raw egg and 2 table spoons of peanut butter. it s tasty, try it I found it on a fitness website among home protein shakes recipes. The only problem with it is that you get tired of it pretty quickly, esp. if you drink it every day.. will search for new flavors
