Hi everyone,

I'm 18 and have put braces off for way too long. I'm ready to get them on, because it is a necessary step to getting jaw surgery to correct my underbite. Being a college student, I'm not looking forward to 1-2 years with braces but I know it will be worth it in the end! I would love to hear from others, including those that have or are planning on getting jaw surgery as well. As for braces, I would like them to be the least noticeable, but what are people's feelings on the pros and cons of ceramic ones? I hope to hear from you all!

thank you!

Having had both metal as a kid,and rebraced in ceramic due to relapse of my teeth. If financial is not a consideration, I would recommend ceramic, but try only self ligating ceramics

Hi and welcome to this forum Carrie and it's great you're going to keep a blog.

We offer ceramic brackets (not self ligating) to all our patients, mostly because they're discreet, comfortable and help at a time when many people feel self conscious. I would recommend any type of ceramic brackets ... ligating or non ligating ... it's the ceramic look and feel that makes you feel good ... and looks great in photos!

If your brackets have ligs ... remember these are the same ligs that are used with metal brackets. The light shades will stain over time or quickly with a few foods that can be avoided until close to adjustment days. We offer lig changes mid adjustment, if it's for a special reason. Many of our adults take this option, especially if it's for a special occasion or appointment.

I also had a class III bite, but mine didn't require surgery, as it was a result of my teeth, not my jaw. It's been a long journey for me, but I've also had issues with an impacted canine etc etc etc.

Here's to your treatment being smooth!

I'm nearly 40 and getting braces for the first time to prepare for orthognathic surgery to correct my own underbite.

Personally, I could care less what kind of braces they are - I just want to get this done. View my blog here and at The Ugly Duckling and you'll find why!

    Welcome, Carrie!
I'm new here, too, and have found that everyone here is awesomely helpful!

I can't address your question regarding jaw surgery (although I do have to have an extraction at some point), I, too, struggled with the dilemma of ceramics vs. metals. Sunny and a few others were of huge help in informing me that whatever I decide is best for me... will be the best choice.

That said... if you're as concerned about aesthetics as I am, ceramics (self-ligating or not) are probably your best bet. You'll never really know until you get them on, so at this point, I've stopped second-guessing myself and I've told all the gremlins in my brain to "shut up!" LOL!

I know you'll do great. Please keep us posted here!

Hi, I have a serious overbite and have to have surgery for it... I had braces for a while... but stopped growing so they didn't work. I also want a bit of reassurance ><

I put a lot of serious thought into the concept of getting surgery and I must say researching it really does make me slightly more confident about it and I hope it has for you too (:

Could anyone possibly comment on my blog please?
