Oops... I Lost a Lig!

My first brace-related boo-boo in over a year happened yesterday. I was eating a piece of chicken and, as usual, was trying to fish out the food stuck in my brackets. I felt something round and "wiry" that definitely was not chicken. Turns out, it was the Lavendar lig on my second-to-last bracketed upper right tooth! I remember the assistant having a heck of a time getting it on there. It took her 4-5 tries, because it kept snapping. Fortunately, the wire is still in the bracket, as well as in the very last metal bracket next to it, so I doubt I will have any problems. Just to be safe, I will call the ortho when he gets in on Tuesday.

I see how quickly they lose their elasticity. After only a week, it actually looks like a misshapen piece wire instead of an elastic band.

I think I've lost a couple when the more rotated teeth still needed quite a bit of work.

Isn't it great to see how the ligs change so quickly ... proving again that they're not going to stop the archwire from doing it's job!

I was debating on whether or not to even call them today since I know that wire isn't going anywhere. However, this morning I noticed that my lower-left premolar (the one with the elastics hook attached to it) has a teeny, eeny, weeny sharp piece of metal sticking up on the top of the bracket. I know I've poked my finger on it a couple of times in the past month... and I noticed my elastic (as well as my lower lip!) on that side shreds more than the other side. I decided to get right up in the mirror and get a closer look, and yep, a part of the bracket is sticking up. I wonder if I bent/broke it when I started wearing elastics there? I do recall one instance where I could not get the elastic off - it was totally stuck and I had to pull hard to get it off. Might have bent the bracket in the process.

Anyway, I am going to give them a call this morning to tell them about the bracket. I'm sure I'll be fine until my next appointment on the 17th, but I want them to have it on my record in case they need to spend extra time filing it down.

Okay, I called the office. Re: the missing lig, she said as long as the wire stays put and isn't poking me, don't worry about it. As for the wire sticking straight out of the bracket that I keep impaling myself on, she had 2 words for me: "Use wax." I tell you - whoever invented dental wax must be a bazillionaire! I will muddle through until my next appointment in 2.5 weeks.

Nasty that you can't have that bit of wire clipped Cathy, but hopefully the wax will do a great job and stop any stabbings!

Good luck with your next couple of weeks!
