Whats under those brakets?!?

Posted 05-14-2008 at 10:53 PM by coolestSamantha
After 3 years with this metal contraption on my teeth sometimes I try wondering how big my teeth really are you know? My mom says she thinks there about the same size of hers because her teeth looked like that in brace... but I'm not so sure. From what i've read about braces the ones are parents wore were very different believe it or not. They took up more room on the teeth and instead of changing wires like they do now ( more effictive to moving teeth faster ). They literally tighted the wire by twisting it or something. Painful. But yet from what i've been learning are parents wore braces for less time then us... but new techonolgy is suppose to make it faster. Are they lieing or what?

Yeah. I feel that my teeth are smaller because of the braces. I kind of get scared that my teeth are shrinking. Yup the braces were wrapped around each tooth back then. True about wires back then. I needed braces for 2 years. Mom: 4 years (braced in the 1980s, lowers only) Dad: 6 years (braced in the 1960s)

The average time a person needs to wear braces has decreased by around 12 months over the past 15 years. By nearly 18 months if you consider the average time work was done 20 years ago. Back then, treatment took longer and less was often acheived, as the technology to make changes like widening archs, working without extractions, was not readily available. Archwires have changed considerable and there were no 'memory' archwires and many adjustments were 'tightenings', where the ends of the archwires were tightened, to move teeth into alignment.

Your teeth should be the same size that they would have been, wether you've not had braces, or not. If you've had a tooth (or teeth), you'd be aware of this, and the amount that a tooth (or teeth) is moved like this is minor.

Time to focus on how much fun it will be to have a naked mouth!

I giggled at "naked mouth" because it's so true. I remember when I got them off as a kid and my teeth just felt so thin.

When the ortho removes a bracket to change it's placement, I always take the opportunity to let my tongue to some exploring. I can't see the tooth, but I sure can feel it, and the difference to the ones beside it (which still have brackets), is always amazing.

Bring on nakedness ...
