Thanks for the words of welcome to everyone who posted to me yesterday.

This morning all the brackets went on, and the bottom wire went on. I also got a "speed bump" installed on the back of one of my front teeth. I need two teeth extracted on the top, a wisdom and a tooth on the side to make room for movement. So about a week after the surgery I'll have that top wire put on. Surgery should happen in the next few days. The office should be calling today to set up the appointment.

I invested in a waterpik, and stocked up on braces-safe sugar free gum. I am very dedicated to doing everything I can to get these things moving and want those braces off in 18 months, not 24.

I must say, so far they are more annoying than anything. Eating is awkward. Actually, everything is awkward. And I feel totally self-conscious. Learning how to live with these things is definitely going to take some time. It's definitely the most foreign feeling I've ever had. I will be glad when this odd feeling goes away and I begin to feel more comfortable in my skin again. I just don't feel like "me".

Congratulations on getting your braces! They feel really weird at first and it's kind of a learning curve on trying to chew without bumping things. I can guarantee you that this is temporary and you'll feel comfortable with them soon. The first few days are the hardest, and after the pain subsides it's all about adjusting to the feeling and getting used to them in general. Once you see your teeth move, it begins to be kind of a cool experience rather than just weird and painful. There's all sorts of movement to watch in the first few months, which is kind of fun. Good luck with everything!

Great you've started Denise and good luck with adjusting. Take extra care with your upper brackets, as naked brackets ... no wire etc, often poke more into the mouth than those that have something to stop that from happening. Remember wax is a great way to prevent mouth sores, while helping the mouth to toughen.

Feeling awkard seems to be quite common during the first few weeks, but hopefully soon you'll look back on this entry in your blog and you're barely be able to remember what that feeling was like. It's incredible, but for most people, the day comes and we forget we have braces, unless we're eating and have to remember to check for food etc. It's great when that happens, and hopefully it won't be too long for you!

    Good luck with your treatment!

Eating will become easier. Soon you won't even notice the braces. Hope your surgery goes well.
