Bottom teeth (ones with the wire) hurt. Can't eat solids. Any pressure on the teeth, upper or lower, is painful. Chewing gum all morning to try and keep the blood flowing and help alleviate the pain quicker.

My cheeks are starting to get scratched up inside. Can't seem to get the wax to stick to the brackets that are scratching me.

Surgery for the two extractions probably will happen sometime next week, so the week following will be time for upper brackets and then, horray even more pain! However, once the top brackets go on the orthodontist says I will only have to come in about every 8-10 weeks for tightening and wire replacements. They ran through all the different types of wires they are going to use on me and of course it was all foreign lingo at the time.

Still hanging in there, optimistic that in 18 months this will all have been worth it to have not only straight, pretty teeth, but HEALTHY teeth as well.

Keep with the positive attitude ... plus generous amounts of wax. It seems that larger amounts of wax, moulded round the brackets, is the best way to keep the wax in place. The wax will help your mouth toughen, without sores and soon eating will be easy again.

    Good luck with the chewing!

I did finally just start piling the wax onto the brackets and I feel so much better. It still slips off when I eat anything so I just replace the wax after a meal. I think these braces are going to be one of the best dietary aides I've ever had!

    Hey Denise,

I was afk and just read through your blog. I'm 30 too so we're in the same boat

My cheeks were scratched up inside too at first but it just stops after a couple of days - its the oddest thing. They don't start scratching less (as far as I could tell), they just decided to stop on their own lol

I hear chewing gum is useful - does it hurt to chew that too? Sorry that I don't have any advice beyond wait it out. The 18 months will definitely be worth it!

Gum does hurt too, though the longer I did it, the less sensitive my mouth seemed to be. Right now I'm piling the wax on, trying to give my cheeks a chance to heal. I think I've used enough to build a yankee candle, but at least it's giving me a small reprieve. My lower teeth aren't as sore today as they were last night so that's a good sign!
