First Full Week

Today marks my first whole week with braces. Friday is surgery to pull two teeth, and the top wire goes on the 29th. I am finally feeling only a tiny bit of pressure on the top teeth when I try to bite into food. Back teeth are basically back to 'normal'. Brackets are still cutting the inside of my cheeks but the calluses are building and I think another few weeks and it'll be fine.

On another somewhat funny note, my sister went to the orthodontist yesterday and what started as a consultation ended up with them taking molds, putting on spacers, and scheduling her braces to go on this coming Monday. I told her she's in for a not-so-fun ride, but at least we are doing it together! Her teeth need a lot more work than mine, but at least we can encourage each other through this journey and have someone who really understands our pain!

Fantastic that your first full week has passed. Here's to your mouth feeling better every day and you soon seeing progress.

My cheeks have never developed calluses, wonder if it was due to using wax for the first couple of weeks and the daily warm salt water rinses I've been doing for nearly four years!

Hope your sister's treatment goes well and that she has an easy treatment. It will be great being able to support each other and share the excitement and celebration when changes can be seen.

Wow, your parents are going to be broke! Did she go in expecting to get braces or just get "swept up" in the excitement? I think it would be neat to have someone irl to commiserate with. Everyone I know is sick of hearing about my braces LOL

Its funny how different parts of your moth build up calluses first. I would have thought it would all be the same. Sounds like you weathered the worst though!

Well, I'm 30 and she's 23, and we are both paying for our own braces. But we sure do wish we had parents who would foot the bill for us! She knew she needed them, I just think that my getting them kind of spurred her to realize that she was really going to be in for some major pain if she didn't do the braces now. So, here we go together!!

Good to hear that the pressure when chewing has eased up, Denise. The first week seems to be the worst for that, and it gets much easier after that. Good luck with your extractions tomorrow! That's cool that your sister is beginning her treatment too!

Anny - I can relate to what you said about people you know being tired of hearing about the braces. He's been a great support, but I know my husband is probably sick of hearing about mine! LOL!
