Today I had my retainer fitted to expand my top pallet. Within an hour my mouth and face started aching. I suffered from a sore head for the day too. Pain killers didn't seem to do much to help either.

I have constantly been slevering and find it very difficult to eat. Ive stuck to soft bread, soup and banana for today, hopefully tomorrow I will be able to eat more.

I have been lisping all day too, which is really embarrassing lol Ive been told this will ease after a week... I hope it does!!!

In a month I will be having my braces fixed.

Bye for now

    Congratulations on getting started!

With Invisalign, we can always choose to put in new trays in the evening in order to sleep through the "first day" pain. If I had gotten my Invisalign before my daughter got her metal braces off, I would definitely have known to schedule her appointments as late in the day as possible so she, too, could sleep through the worst of it! Food for thought...

    Good luck!

    Any photos?!

Emma it will get easier and to help, make sure you keep well hydrated. Also reading and singing out loud help people to adjust to having an expander. Warm salt water rinses help soothe the mouth ... and these are great if done 5+ times a day when your mouth is feeling a bit achy.

It's good your ortho is having you in for an adjustment so soon, as due to you being an adult with an expander, there is more attention needed to make sure the expander is doing the right job.

Hopefully you'll soon be feeling great and eating and talking will be fun again!

    Hey Phantom Muse,
Well when I go to have my braces fitted I will have to go back to work after as the orthodontist isn't open until late. So when ever I get them I will have to suffer through the day

I have put a few pics in my album

Thanks for the advice Sunny, I am keeping well hydrated. I have also been singing along to music etc hehe Im still lisping tho Only day 3 though.
Hopefully my speech will get back to normal soon!

Emmas going to work after having your braces bonded shouldn't be an issues. Thousands of kids return to school every day after getting braces, so don't be concerned. The important things to remember are ... lip balm - as your lips may become more dry, water - to keep your mouth well hydrated, wax - incase any brackets rub ... and make a dental pack ... include travel sized toothbrush and toothpaste, floss, interdental brushes, toothpicks and a mirror.

Hopefully your mouth will feel great and there won't be any suffering ... that's something that's not common with orthodontics ... which is good for all of us!

    Thanks Sunny,
Im a dental nurse so I already have toothbrush etc at work for after meals. Im quite a keen brusher, I brushed my teeth 3 times a day before getting this anyway. I am concerned about staining though, im getting the clear brackets. :s

    Thanks

In your line of work, you should know that braces rarely hurt ... and it will definitely be advantage for your oral hygiene.

The clear brackets don't stain, so don't worry about them. If you have ligs, they stain, but you can ask about teflon coated wire ties. We also allow our patients to come in for lig changes if they need to.

Good luck preparing for your treatment!

I have only been a dental nurse for about 3months and although I have learnt alot, I still have tons to learn yet. I find dentistry interesting and love to see the out come after crowns, fillings etc. Its this job that has finally given me the confidence to get a brace

At my practice we don't see too many braces so I don't know to much about them yet, I am forever asking the dentist for advice though, so it is a good position to be in. I like coming on here to speak to people who are in the same position as me, I don't know any other adults who have a brace.

    Thanks

When I got my braces I was working as a counsellor and like you I didn't know any adults with braces. At that time a forum like this was helped me find the strength to get started and the advice was outstanding.

It was a nearly two years later when my ortho went into partnership with two others, that he told me they would be looking for assistants and about the training etc. I said I was interested and that was the beginning of this line of work, which I'm passionate about.

It's great to post questions and get advice from a range of people, as we've all had different experiences. I've never had any pain, and only mild discomfort a couple of times. Whereas a few others did have pain for a few days to a few weeks ... and some still feel sore at adjustments ... we all experience pain differently and have differing levels of pain we cope with.

Good luck with your work and your treatment!
