Follow me as I travel through a rocky course of treatment with Invisalign. Why rocky? Because I just expect it to be. Call me pessimistic, or call me "entertaining."

What not to eat?

Posted 10-23-2008 at 01:23 AM by JeffR
My ortho said that she believes we SHOULD eat some things with the trays in. Unless it's super hot or hard, they can handle it. I'm not buying it.

My first meal after my fitting yesterday was lunch, but without trays. I just had the aligners in. I bought a turkey sandwich with cheese and lettuce. That didn't work out so well.

I have 2 attachments on my back molars for bite adjustment. These mean that I can't close my bite entirely. So when I bit into the sandwich and pulled away, the lettuce stayed behind and slid out of my teeth. Not fun.

Today, I tried to eat a soft cookie with my trays in. It worked! But it's not something I'll try again. Bits of chocolate and cookie everywhere, and the trays aren't easy to clean.

So they'll come out when I eat and drink anything other than water. I'll have to watch what I eat anyway with these molar based attachments. This isn't going to be fun.

The rule at the orthodontist practice where I work, is water only when aligners are in. The reason for this is mainly due to the aligners trapping food/liquid next to your teeth and the damage acid and sugars will do when trapped this way. Also some foods/liquids will weaken/damage the aligners, which will affect the progress of the teeth.

We tell patients not to worry about the attachments, although yours may take a little longer to adjust to. Attachments generally act the same as a bracket and mean that you can eat and drink whatever you like, as long as you rinse your mouth during and after eating, and brush two or three times a day. Although with invisalign, it's often necessary to brush more often than with bracket braces. Remember not to brush if you've been eating or drinking foods with acid in them. Wait 20-30 minutes, then brush. Instead rinse your mouth well with water, or a salt water mix.

Good luck!
