Thats right, today was the big day, when the braces went on. I took one last look in the mirror at what would be the last time i saw myself without braces for the next 2 years.

The next time i would see that smile, would be after all is said and done after the surgery.

To give you a quick run down, i will have these braces on for 1 year (give or take a few months), followed by surgery to bring my bottom jaw forward, then six months after that.... BRACES BE GONE.

Of course im not going into this expecting to stick to some magical deadline. I know that at the end of the day, it will take as long as it takes. And boy will it be worth it.

The whole process of having the braces installed was rather a breeze. First i donned a pair of very stylish sunnies, the kind you'd expect to see on a welder. Then my ortho proceeded to clean my teeth with some kind of brush on paste. Prep the teeth i believe he called it.

Then, they rinse that off with a high pressure hose, the kind you find at your local car wash. Would explain why my nose was accidently washed out at the same time. Thank goodness the dental nurse didn't follow with the sucker tube. That would have been interesting. haha.

Once your rinsed and dried, he then placed the brackets one by one with a glue, and followed with a blue light to cure it into place.

Then the brackets went on my back teeth, which actually wasn't all that bad. I imagined that part to be worse. Easy Peezy.

The wire is the next step, which took no time at all to install. Before i knew it, the wire was placed in, and the ligatures bands were being placed on the brackets. After 1 hour of being in the chair, WE WERE DONE !!!!

First impressions... Well, it isn't that bad. I had imagined much worse. Your lips are quite puffy, and its hard to talk as your lip doesn't slide over the brackets it tends to get caught on one side or the other.

Im sure the fact that your lips are all dry from having your mouth open for an hour doesn't help the fact.

But.... its now 6 Hours later, and after popping 2 panadeine to deal with what i now call, relocating pain, i can honestly say its all gonna be down hill from this moment.

So don't hide away from the world thinking you've just been put into solitary prison, jump on here and tell us all what your going through. I helps more than you'd think.

Thanks for reading

Wow ... those brackets look great on your uppers ... looks like you just have a wire ... fantastic!

Now comes the special care ... drink plenty, as you need to keep your mouth well hydrated to help it move easily around your brackets. Keep your lips moist with lip balm, so they can move easily over your brackets and if you have any rubbing, cover the bracket(s) with wax, so that your mouth can toughen without sores. Next get back to your usually life as quickly as possible ... there does seem to be a connection between 'babying' your mouth and discomfort ... 'babying' is not recommended!

Here's to you seeing some great results soon!

Wow they look great! I am going to be having the same treatment as you..braces for a year then jaw surgery to pull the lower jaw forward and braces for approx another year. I get my braces put on in 8 days. Thanks for sharing your story, I was curious about the process of getting my braces put on. Good luck in your treatment!
