Hey, everyone. I have a bit of a problem here. Today I popped out one of my bottom wires. It came out from my last molar, and it's cutting into my cheek like crazy. My ortho is in my home town, but I'm at school now, so I can't really go home for an emergency appointment. My next adjustment is in 2 weeks. I called the ortho, and he said it doesn't really matter that the wire is out, and it won't slow down treatment, so I should just cut it, but I can't get it. I also can't keep wax on it. It's driving me nuts, and I don't think I can wait 2 weeks. Any suggestions?

    A frustrating situation Ksiezyc!

Having the wire out won't affect your treatment, but it could cause your mouth considerable trauma if it's poking you. I recommend you call your ortho again and explain that the archwire is cutting your cheek and that you aren't able to cut the wire yourself, or put wax on it.

I hope they can recommend something that will work. I'm not sure what country you live in, or what the rules are between dentist's and orthodontists, but here in Australia, a dentist won't trim an archwire for a person, unless faxed permission from the orthodontist is received. If you can't get to your ortho, check if he will allow a nearby dentist to do the clipping for you.

    Good luck!

Thanks, Sunny You always seem to have good advice.

I live in the US, and I was going to call Student Health Services tomorrow and see if they have a dentist on staff. I think I found a solution, though. The bracket in question has a little hook sticking out of the bottom, and I put the wire underneath it. It stays there, and I can't feel it anymore. Is that going to put any kind of unwanted pressure on my remaining teeth?

It will affect the teeth closest to the one you've hooked it under, plus the one it's hooked under. Since your appointment is still two weeks away, I recommend you give your ortho a call and check that this is ok. Hopefully it will be, but it's always best to be certain.

    Take care!
