One month visit and some questions

So at my one-month visit the ortho pulled out the plaster model he got back from the lab showing what my teeth will hopefully look like when we're done. Wow. Imagine me, with straight teeth!

The ortho wants to pull one of my incisors that tips way back to relieve the crowding on the bottom arch. So I'd have 3 incisors, which I think would look weird. He says it won't be that obvious to others and that it is the most "practical" approach at my age with my teeth. So, I would appreciate thoughts on having 3 incisors.

Second, the tech used wire ligatures this time instead of the clear o-rings they used last time. She said they work better at getting the wire to do its job. I can't tell any difference in how they look and I don't feel with my tongue so I guess that's cool, but I didn't realize they still do that.

I am supposed to make a decision on that bottom tooth by next visit, although since I wasn't really offered an alternative, I guess the decision is pretty easy, huh?

Thats cool. Take some pictures next time and post them

I really hate to to consider exractions but in many cases they are necessary and you can't even notice....

    Good luck

Fantastic that you've seen a mould of your possible end result ... exciting stuff!

Have a lower incisor extracted isn't as unusual as it sounds. This is a good choice where more space than can be gained using IPR is needed and less space than taking a full sized back tooth out.

Look at yourself in the mirror while you're talking and singing ... do you see your lower teeth? If you do how much of them and for how long? Would another person ever notice that you have three incisors instead of four? I'm confident the answer to that last question is no!

    Good luck!

PS ... I think I have a link to a blog that shows this happening to a person, with outstanding results. I'll try and find the assignment I included this in and share it with you.

Here's a link to check out the picture of someone missing a lower incisor. Check out patient #11. Most people don't have coincident midlines, and even fewer people notice that. Your lower teeth will be symmetrical, but the middle of the bottom teeth will now be in the centre of the middle incisor. Hope this helps!

Sunny - thank you for posting the link to that blog. I just finished reading all of it, and it was fascinating! I'll say it again - I'm amazed at what orthodontists can do to improve someone's appearance and self-esteem. Had I not been told, I never would have noticed that she was missing a lower incisor, or that her midline wasn't "perfect". She has a beautiful smile, even with an overjet, which I can't see either. haha

lojoma - I think you should go for it. It looks like her gap closed at least halfway on its own, without any elastics or chains! And her teeth look fabulous.

Thanks, y'all! It helped a lot to see pics of people with 3 incisors down there.

One effect of the wire ligatures that I didn't expect was that it makes the brackets hurt my lips more...the wire is much thinner than the o-rings, so the space between the tooth and bracket where the o-ring would normally fill is just an open space, which is easy to get lip tissue caught in, and they feel sharper because of it. I thought I was free of wax, but back to wax we go.
