Hey,

So i had my 2 upper pre molars extracted 10 days ago which i was super nervous about, turns out i didnt need to worry!! I havent actually felt any real pain since having them out, and as my mouth was numbed throughout the procedure so i didnt feel a thing. The only thing i could moan about was that it was a little bit uncomfortable, but still painless. I was hoping to keep the teeth they extracted as a little keepsake but my dentist got excited when she saw them as they had 3 roots not the uaual 2 (this was the first time she had extracted teeth with 3 roots) so i let her keep them so she could show the other dentists!!

A week after having the extractions i got my brace fitted This is what i have really been looking forward to!! Having the brace actually fitted was again no problem, i was just so pleased that i was finally getting it fitted to worry about what was going on in my mouth.

I am now on my 3rd day in braces and have to say that so far i have felt quite abit of pain. The 2nd day was the worst for me as i just could chew a thing and my bite had gone completely AWOL, i couldnt shut my mouth properly without feeling ALOT of pain, and i could just feel constant pressure on my teeth like someone was punching them over and over. Although saying this day 3 has been sooooo much better, i still cant chew alot but most of the pressure has gone. Im hoping that in a couple more days i will be back to eating normally.

Aside from all of this i must say that i am extremely pleased with they way they look. I will confess to being very nervous about how they were going to look (vain i know) but by having ceramics on the top they are barely noticeable. I know that i will have to watch what i eat so that they dont stain, but my ortho has kindly said that she will change the ligs between adjustments if they start to stain at no extra cost!!

Also i know i am only 3 days in, and it is probably mind over matter but im pretty sure i can already see minor improvements. I doubt that if i pointed it out to any one else they would notice but in my head they are already moving, which makes me even more happy!! I will usually have adjustments every 6-8 weeks but my first will be 4 weeks just so that my ortho can see how im getting on and to make sure everythings ok.

Overall im sooooooooooo happy that i went through with it as i know that in 18months time i will have beautiful teeth and a great smile to enjoy for the rest of my life!!

So glad to hear that things are going well for you! The *pain* really does improve, and you will be able to eat most anything sooner rather than later.

Take photos (use the macro setting on your camera) every few weeks (I take photos right before I change each Invisalign tray every two weeks) so you can have a tangible account of the changes in your teeth. The photos also provide encouragement when you are having an uncomfortable day and can't remember why on earth you decided to get braces!

I think all of us with braces of any sort are worried about our appearance, but within a few weeks are so used to it we can't remember what it was like before having them. Just think of this all as a wonderful journey toward a goal that will make you so happy!

    Fantastic post Mel!

It's great when the things we worry most about aren't so bad ... just a shame we had to waste time worrying, but the outcome is worth it.

Hopefully your mouth will feel heaps better in a day or two. Make sure you keep well hydrated and the warm salt water rinses usually soothe the mouth, when it's feeling sore.

It's good that you think you can see progress already ... fantastic motivation!

    Here's to things going smoothly!

So, so happy for you, Mel! You've gotten me so excited to get mine done in a few days. I'm also getting ceramic on top and metal on the bottom (for the same reasons you did). I can't wait! I've given myself 3 whole days to get through the initial pain/discomfort before having to go back to work.

And ditto to what Phantom Muse said - please post pics!! We'd love to follow your progress. :-)

Wahoo good job!! The first two weeks for me were pure hell, but I promise you it DOES get a lot easier! I'm glad you're so excited, and watching your teeth move is seriously the coolest thing! Congrats!!
