I went to an ortho for a consultation, i have an overbite class i malocclusion, was told that since I have all my teeth including wisdom, that he'll have to removed 4 premolars and get braces for 2 yrs, I'm so used to my mouth guard, I'm concern that I might damage my teeth even more, will braces stop the grinding? what can I use to protect my teeth? Don't now what to do!

Braces won't stop the grinding however the orthodontist might could make you a custom mouth guard. Having teeth pulled will probably help with fixing the overbite. I have a class 3 overbite so mine requires surgery but not all cases do.

    Good luck.

As Jenn has written, your grinding may not improve while you're having orthodontic treatment ... and it might not stop after the treatment either ... although it might.

For people who grind a lot, an orthodontist can make a soft mouthguard that won't prevent the teeth from still moving. You need to discuss this with your ortho, as it will require including in your treatment plan.

    Good luck!

I grind more that I have my braces on. I think its because I am so conscious of my teeth that I'm always thinking about them and so I play with them more. I've had mine 7 weeks not. I'm also a little OCD so I doubt I'll stop anytime soon. My orthodontist has given me an aqualizer which is AWESOME. it's like two saline filled packets with a piece of fabric attaching them together and it wraps around your gums. Hard to explain but you can freeze it and it helps when your teeth are sore. And when you grind you don't damage your teeth. When I finish my braces then I'll get a fitted mouthguard. I was told NOT NOT NOT to wear a mouthgaurd with braces because it mess with the treatement plan.

    Good luck fellow grinder!
