Had my last 2 ortho appointments before my braces go on. Didn't exactly get the news I wanted to hear. Found out that I will need surgery after a year of braces. My lower jaw will be broken and pulled forward to correct my bite. I will also have 2 teeth pulled at this time. This followed by another year in braces.

I found this out on August 27/09. I know that I have a year's time before the surgery, but still scary to hear the appointment before I get my braces put on!

I know that it will be worth it, as I've wanted to fix my teeth for a long time. I am actually really looking forward to getting my braces put on September 16/09. Counting down the days even! I was going to get ceramic braces on top, but my Ortho suggested going full metal since I have opted to have the surgery done.

My other option was to have 2 teeth on the top pulled and still have an overbite when all is said and done. I've wanted this forever so I am going to do it right. And though I am hesitant on the surgery part of my treatment, I am so lucky to have the support of my wonderful boyfriend and family along the way. So I'm going to go for it! I know it will be worth it in the end.

I am now waiting for my surgeon's office to call so that I can set up an appointment for a consultation with him. I'm looking forward to that and being able to have some questions answered. I know that will make me feel much better about it.

Next entry will be braces on! Happy smiling!

    Hey Trigger,

I am having the same thing done. Braces top and bottom, and in a years time, having the bottom jaw broken and brought forward.

Best thing i can offer is lots of advice. Look up the procedure, look it up on youtube and anywhere else where you can get people's stories. There are plenty of sites when people blog their entire treatment.

Don't freak out when you see all the stories, and video's people have made. Try and think of it as a learning experience. The more you know about what will happen, the less scary it will be.

I too freaked out at first when i looked into it. But after sleeping on it, and having time to properly think it all through, i was far better off knowing, than not knowing anything about it.

The end result will be mind blowing, and one thing thats for certain, when this is all said and done, you will no longer be self conscious about yourself. No more hiding your smile. How good a feeling will that be.

Get excited and go for it. We're all behind you

Surgery is a lot to take in, but I really wish I was in your shoes, as there'd be a good chance my treatment would have been finished a year or 18 months ago. Due to my not being able to have surgery, I've still not got a date for completing treatment ... but am hoping it will be before Christmas.

All the best with getting your treatment started!

Thanks for all the encouragement everyone! It is really appreciated! I am very nervous about the surgery, but it is something that is important to me. It is my choice and I am lucky that I have a good insurance plan that will cover almost all of my treatment and surgery.

Joshy2006a, I thought I made a mistake watching some videos people had posted on YouTube...But it's starting to sink in now and I'm getting used to the idea and I try to keep the end result of a beautiful smile in mind! I think a person is better to go into it having some general idea of what to expect. Of course everyone is different and has different experiences too, but it has really helped me to learn and hopefully I can help others with my treatment.

I'm so glad I found this forum. It's a nice feeling to know you're not alone through this process and that others out there really understand how you feel. Thanks again.
