Hi all,
I got my braces off couple of days ago and got my Hawley retainers for both jaws, but after wearing them for a day my teeth started hurting, as if I just got new braces and they keep moving my teeth, and another thing is the retainer wire doesn't seem do be fixed on my teeth, i can see a gap between my teeth and the wire. should I get new retainers? And another problem is that after taking my braces off, the outer part of my teeth feels real rough, I asked my dentist to polish them, and she kinda did, but not much as changed, my dentist said that its the left over from the glue that held the braces and that it will go away soon. Do I have anything to worry about? Thanks for advice and help. |

The excess bonding should wear away over time, but if it bothers you, you can ask her to polish the teeth a little more. The rub is that you will likely end up losing a micro-layer of enamel into the bargain.
As to the retainer, give your ortho a call and mention that it does not feel snug and yet your teeth ache. It's possible that the retainer might need to be adjusted, but your ortho will probably need to see you to make that determination. |

zoso - is it possible that the original mold to make the retainer was screwed up? I have seen cased where retainers are too tight and actually crowd teeth in certain areas... The patient usually does not know enough to speak up, and it affects the end results.
Bodia- hawley retainers can be minorly adjusted and the pink area can be shaved if it is bothering you.. I would go back to the ortho imeediately and let him/her know. Retainers are really still part of the treatment... Keep us posted. |

I don't know, but it certainly makes sense. But, as you say, the acrylic can be trimmed, and the wires can be tweaked; and even if your ortho doesn't include a routine series of follow-up appointments once you're in retainers, I agree with Mike that you should consider yourself still to be covered at least until that retainer seems to fit correctly!

I got this new type of retainer. My ortho called it a Hybrid Retainer. He claims it is the newest type of retainer on the market. It is a wireless invisible retainer that never needs to be adjusted. The best part is that it is very comfortable and no one even knows that I am wearing it.
