They do tend to need to be replaced more often than Hawley retainers. This is especially true if you are given to grinding your teeth.
As to going straight to nights only, I'll say this. The text books still suggest as much as a year of round the clock wear. But your orthodontist obviously knows what he is doing, and must be confident that you will be perfectly OK going straight to night time wear. His reputation is on the line here along with your straight teethHowever, if at any stage you feel like your teeth are not being retained well, you can and should give your ortho a call and have him evaluate.
