I am "suppose" to be getting my braces taken off next week. Okay here is my issue, a couple of months ago I had to get a bracket taken off and another one put on (for repositioning purposes). OMG!! it reaaly hurt when the bracket was yanked off. I have the ceramic braces and it came off in like 2-3 tries b/c it broke up.
I was told that b/c they can break easily that it is much harder to take off verses the metal.
So of course anxiety is getting the best of me b/c I'm thinking if it hurt taking one off, how am I going to be able to sit still through the whole ordeal? Thank God I only have braces on my top teeth. It literally felt like she was trying to pull out my tooth.
So I want to know did it hurt for any of you to get the braces taken off? What kind of braces did you have?

This is my experience only...
I had a few ceramics break on me both when they were removed/repositioned during treatment and on debanding. I was given something to bite on while they were removed which caused a bit of pressure. I don't recall pain as such, just the extra work involved in removing bits of bracket from my teeth.
If in doubt, pop a painkiller before you go in.
I've had both ceramic and metal brackets removed, although none broke. I've found no difference in the removing, between the ceramic or the metal. The difference in the comfort level did seem related to the removing of the bonding left behind and applied to both the ceramic and metal and affected those teeth that had moved the most recently.
The ortho's I work for have specialised tools that remove the ceramic brackets we use, the same as they remove the metal ones.
Most of our patients cope well with the removing of their braces, due to their teeth being in a stable place and the teeth not having moved much in the previous few weeks.
Good luck!![]()
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!
Got my braces taken off today, it was a little annoying I think hearing the braces being popped off got to me more than anything. Although that one tooth that I talked about in the first post did hurt a little not alot.
The filing down didn't bother me too much except when she hit my gum lineSince I got the bonded retainer on my top teeth it was awkward the way I had to sit for a long time with my mouth wide open and head titled waaaayyyy back.
The floss my teeth I guess to make sure she didn't completed bond my teeth, funny though the bond (cement) is a dot on eavh tooth, instead the bond goes across my teeth leaving little room at the gum line to floss.
Anyway that's my story.
Fantastic that the brackets are gone!
If I was given a choice to have my bonded retainer bonded to every tooth, or just at the ends, I'd definitely choose every tooth, as this should make it more secure. Hopefully you'll adjust quickly to having it.
Good luck enjoying your new bite and smile!![]()

I noticed yesterday that some of the glue/cement used to bond my retainer is rubbing off and some of the wire is exposed not a lot and not on the ends it's only a little bit but it's bothering me in a sense that if it's doing this now what in the world is going to happen later on since this is suppose to be permanent?
I'm going to call my ortho Monday and see if I can come in. Is it normal for some of it to rub off?
You're doing the right thing planning to talk to your ortho ... this is the person who will be able to answer your question.
Good luck!![]()

I had my braces removed today and I have to say, it was a bit more painful than I thought it would be. I had ceramics on top and metal on bottom and I felt the ceramic ones breaking off into pieces and landing on my tongue. The ortho had to actually grab the pieces off my tongue. The front teeth hurt the worst, but she said that was normal. I had no idea it would hurt like that, otherwise I would've taken some meds beforehand. Oh well, it's over now and I'm happy with my result. Just be warned that it can be painful or uncomfortable in some situations like mine. Glad to hear yours are off and it's over and done with. I think removing them is the worst part of treatment but that's just my experience, and of course, it's worth it to have a nice smile at the end!![]()
Jessi................... your experience and mine were the same.

So I went back to my ortho about some of the bonding rubbing off the assistant that put it on did it again and although she smiled the entire time and her tone was good I could tell she felt like I was "questioning" her work.
So she tells me that as long as the wire was not loose it was okay. I told her that tihs wasn't explained to me and that I prefer for the wire to be completely covered with only room at the top for flossing like it was before.
My concern was that food will get stuck between the wires, so she adds more bonding and when the orthodontist comes over to check her work he asked what happened.
The assistant tells him that she put the retainer on "2 weeks" ago and I had a problem with the bonding material and that she explained to me as long as the wire is secure I shouldn't worry.
The the assistant asked me if I grind my teeth. So at this point I'm a little bit pissed b/c she obviously didn't put enough bonding material onthe first time, tried to make it seem like it was something I did, then lie and say she put the retainer on 2 weeks ago when it was 6 days and only 2 days after when the bonding came off. Also I had to get the essix retainer cut down some b/c it was cutting into my gums.
So of course I had to let the ortho know this, anyway everything seems to be good now the bonding material is holding up well and the essix is fitting properly now.![]()
