How did they not see this?

I got my braces taken off in September and had a bonded retainer put on the back of my top 4 teeth (only had braes on top to close a gap and fix a very slight overbite). Anyway afterwards of course I would constantly check out my new smile and noticed that one of the 4 bonded teeth was sticking out further then any of the other teeth.

Even when I clinch my teeth together and hold a mirror underneath it's obvious my teeth are not aligned and that one tooth is sticking out. Of course I did't notice it with the braces on and when they were taken off I was so focused on the gap being gone but as time went on it was apparent.

Anyway so today I went in for a retainer check up and bought it to the attention of the assist (the same one who put the bonded retainer on and some of the glue came off and she act like she was offended that I came back in to have it corrected). So she asked me if I wore the essix retainer every night and said yes but if this 4 teeth are bonded what difference does it make? So she asked to see the essix and noticed the tooth, then looked at my mouth and saw it.

So she calls the orthodontist over and she disappears, he takes a look and says that they are going to take the bonded retainer off, fit me for a hawley to push that tooth back so it is aligned then I will have the bonded put back on and in the meantime I have to wear the essix 24 hr.

He leaves and another assist comes along to take the bonded retainer off (which is no fun btw).

Is it me but I'm thinking how could they not have noticed this before removing the braces mind you they wre taken off in September but wasn't suppose to be taken off until November.

Anyway I'm just glad I said something b/c I wasn't and was just going to let it go and be happy with the fact that the gap was closed but I felt that I have invested too much money, time and pain to not have it the way I want it especially when that tooth was aligned BEFORE the braces were put on.

So it's like they corrected one problem but created another one and since it's a minor issue (I hope) I'm guessing it won't take too long to correct.

ive heard and seen it before. Sometimes braces are taken off too early, or there is a mishap with the retainer. That is why this site is so great as you are educated during your braces treatment.

Some orthos see over 100 patients daily and within all the chaos may not see what you see unless you speak up.

so good job for speaking up

Great you're getting it sorted k-b!

Sometimes minor things that don't affect a persons bite are ignored, but it's good you brought the topic up, since it's botherin you. Good luck!

    Hey Guys,
Had my appointment today for my hawley retainer, there is a little wire that hangs down over that tooth to push it back. I was concerned that there was no wire prongs to keep the gap closed and asked about it. The orthodontist said the wire going across should keep the gap closed this didn't make much sense to me but he assured me it will. So for the next 8 weeks I will be wearing the hawley. My teeth are pretty sore right now (it's been 2 1/2 hours). The 2 big loops are behind the canine teeth I guess that's what's keeping the front 6 teeth together) then there's the back wire on the back teeth to keep the retainer on.

I'm praying this works it's something minor so it should be okay. I just want to be done with the fixing stage and get on with the maintaining stage.

    Thanks guys for responding

Here's to your hawley (with additions) doing the correction nicely.

    Take care!
