I've had mine for 6 months and they're in reasonably good shape.
There's a few cracks in them, but otherwise I have no problems.
Anyone familiar with me here knows that impressions are the death of me, not to mention I'll have to pay for my own retainers soon enough.
How can I keep them in really good shape so I don't have to get new impressions?
There's the cleaning and not leaving them out, etc... I make sure not to leave them in bad conditions, if they're not in my mouth they're in the case.
I'm just wondering if the orthodontists could touch them up with another layer of material or anything like that so the retainers can be reinforced in case of damage.
Thanks for reading.
To keep essix retainers in great condition it's important to keep them clean. Never use any abrasive material or brush them with too much toothpaste. We recommend our patients soak their essix retainers in water with a denture tablet once or twice. This also helps them smell great.

Retainers can not be 'tampered' with, as any changes that are made to them will affect your teeth. Therefore I hope no ortho woujld ever 'tough them up with another layer of material'.
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!
