Fixed retainers and boxing - advice needed

    Hi,

I've had invisalign and now fixed retainers on the back of both my upper and lowers. At first I hated them, now I love em (despite a couple of breakages).

I used to box a while back and am looking to go into it again. Will my retainers/teeth be more susceptible to breaking?

Can I/should I get specially made gum shields?

Normally gum shields are worn in 'serious' sparring or actual fights, not in a normal training/light contact session where you are unlikely to be hit hard (normally its an accident if that happens). But because I've got fixed retainers - do I need to take any extra precautions?

Or if I'm going to persue this (boxing/kick boxing) seriously, I really need to get rid of the fixed retainers?

    thanks for any advice.

Please talk to your ortho about this, as this is the person best qualified to advise you on what is best for your teeth.

    Good luck!
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!

Hmm, my ortho is very young and inexperienced, I was infact her first patient! She's done a great job but also misadvised me at times (e.g. you cant floss anymore now that you have fixed retainers). I'll ask her anyway at the next appointment.
Braces as 13 year old on NHS - put the retainers in a tissue at lunch time....lost em

Braces as an 18 year old (still with NHS) - idiot ortho didnt finish the treatment and fobbed me off.

Invisalign as 27 year old via private treatment + teeth whitening + fixed retainers = perfect smile...for a while. Lingual, fixed retainers eventually turned into a nightmare. Reinvisaligning myself before going to Vivera retainers. Relieved to get rid of those horrendous fixed retainers....

Youth is not a reason for inexperience, but you wrote in another post that you're having treatment with your dentist, which would explain why she lacks experience related to tooth movement, as this is the skill of the orthodontist.

If you don't trust this dentist, then see another one. You have invested much time and money in your teeth ... don't risk it!

    Good luck!
