    Permanent retainer moving/glue chipped off?

    Hello all,

I was (subconsciously) chewing on my nails a little while ago (yes, yes, I know I shouldn't) and managed to get a very short piece of my nail stuck in between my two front bottom teeth. I'm not sure if it's still fully out yet (as it's stuck in a basically unreachable place due to the wire), but it made me aware that my permanent retainer, which was placed on my bottom teeth over a year ago, is looking kind of wonked out.

The glue on one of the front teeth chipped off a while ago, but my teeth didn't seem to move at all. Now the glue on the other front tooth has basically come off most of the tooth and is being held down by the wire. So much so, in fact, that I can use my finger to move part of the retainer up and down my teeth.

My question is: should I replace the permanent retainer? My teeth have not moved at all, which is the point, but is it worth the money to replace them, however much that may be?

    Thanks.

Please get in touch with your ortho to get advice. Bonded retainers (they're not permanent) are only as good as the bonding that is connecting them to your teeth. Also your teeth might not have moved today or may not move next month or a month after that ... but is it worth the risk to find your teeth have moved massively in a few months/years time? New ortho treatment is very expensive when compared to getting your bonded retainer replaced. Also your removable retainers will keep your teeth in place with nightly wear ... of course if you're still wearing them?

    Good luck!
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!
