If you get an essix style, you don't have anything to choose, as they're clear. One removable retainer (upper and lower) is all you need, plus a bonded retainer if your ortho uses them.
Good luck with your treatment!
I'm hoping I can choose the design of my retainer. I saw a cool watermelon one that I liked and I really want that one. Were you able to choose the design of your retainer?
I also want one of the Essix style retainers and am going to ask my ortho which one he plans to use on me and if I can get some clears ones for daily wear. What did your retainer cost you? I have one included in the fee but would also like the clear as well.

After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!
I know it's a long way off, but I kind of wish I was getting a Hawley retainer so I could have a cool design. My ortho has already told me that I'll be getting Essix for the top and a bonded retainer on the bottom. Can you ask your ortho for both? I've heard so many things about Essix retainers cracking and I will be absolutely terrified that my teeth will shift back. I'd love to be able to wear Hawley at night so I don't risk breaking the Essix with any grinding or clenching.
Rachel the preferred retainer for people who grind their teeth is the essix type retainers. Research shows the essix retainers are currently the beset removable retainer on the market due to it wrapping the tooth and holding it in it's finished place. The hawley retainer is still a great retainer, but it works in a different way.

I"m still a long way off from a retainer, I have about another year to go *ugh* but has anyone ever gotten both Essex and Hawley? Essex to wear in the day, then Hawley at night?

You are so right about that. I just confirmed that my treatment plan came with the essay retainers. However, I definitelystill want a Hawley for night time wear. I will be checking to see what the Hawley costs and will have one made as well.
