    Solution for tongue thrust?

I had invisalign last year for approx a year and it made a really good difference to my smile but it did not fully correct my open bite.. less than a year after finishing treatment my teeth shifted slightly and the open bite became more pronounced again. Ive now got fixed ceramic braces (with elastics) which I need for a couple of months to correct the problem and ensure my bite is closed ie. the teeth meet together. My ortho said the open bite is caused by my tongue pushing against my teeth. It is likely that unless I wear retainers very strictly for over 12 hours each day following treatment that there will be a relapse. Does anyone know of any treatment for a tongue thrust? I cant find much info on it for adult treatment in the UK. Any help would be much appreciated

I have this same issue and I am visiting a Speech Pathologist to try to adjust my tongue habits. It is true that adult treatment is difficult and often long because we have more time in our history of bad habits to fix. I have to remain in 24/7 retainers until I feel that I have significantly fixed my tongue habits to safely be out of the retainers during the day. This also extended my original braces by almost 2 years from the original estimate. Find a good speech pathologist that has experience with adult treatment, and be prepared for them to treat you like a child since that is where most of their time is spent.

You could talk to your orthodontist about a "tongue thrust appliance." Basically, it can just be a simple hawley retainer with a metal bar, "blue grass" roller, or some other attachment in the palette to keep your tongue from thrusting. Some orthos just get a simple hole cut in the retainer to give the tongue something to play with.

Hi, I got an open bite 4 months into my treatment with ceramic braces. It drives me crazy. When I get a nick in my nail I can't bite it off like I used to unless I use my I teeth.
I'm wearing elastics at night and I have to tape my mouth closed at night with surgical tape. The soft tape that doesn't pull your skin off but sticks well enough.. It's working really well. It's taping your mouth closed that stops the tongue thrust. That's what my ortho told me. Eventually you wont sleep with your mouth open.
I still leave enough room to fit a straw in in case I get thirsty during the night. It's not as bad as it sounds.

im curious about this too. i just got 4 teeth removed, and as a result, my teeth will end up with a more narrow arch than i already have. My tongue rests at my upper teeth, and now i am worried this will cause my teeth to "buck" out later.

I had a classmate before who has this problem and we used to call her Simpsons because she can be one of the cast of the The Simpsons. But now she is so beautiful and she does not have the same issue anymore.
