Braces off yesterday, Retainer this morning, Breakdown this afternoon... HELP!

I got my braces off yesterday and I got my retainer this morning.
Since I have started wearing I have been incredibly miserable and I wish for my braces back.
I have the clear retainer (Essix?) and it is giving me many many problems.

Putting in the retainer hurts, taking it out hurts even worse and sticks on two teeth.
It feels like the excess plastic wasn't cut properly- it triggers my gag reflex often and scratches at my tongue when I'm not doing anything. When I am talking the bit that touches the roof of my mouth scratches at my tongue. My tongue is red and sore and irritated now.

Is this normal for a new retainer? I tried calling my orthodontist and got to the receptionist who said it's normal for some discomfort and to come in when they are open again on monday if it is still bothering me. I'm having a breakdown right now so some help would be appreciated.

I have the same retainer and find the easiest way to remove it is to work it loose from the back (posterior) teeth on either side. It then slips off easily.

Discuss the discomfort issue with your ortho. It may be possible to file down rough edges so that the retainer is more comfortable.

Do you mean the very ends of the retainer, where the plastic stops?
It's still taking me several minutes to take it off with a lot of pain. :L

When you go into the office, ask someone to show you how best to remove the retainer.
