Can i get compensation/ treatment from my orthodontist?

Sorry in advance for how confusing, badly explained this is. So I had braces when I was 14 for a year and when I got them taken off, my teeth were perfect. Then my orthodontist up and left the country without any warning even though I still had scheduled appointments with her. I wasn't referred to any other orthodontist in that practice. So I've basically been left to be my own consultant since I was 14 (apart from regular dentist appointments) and have been wearing my retainer at night ever since. I'm now 21 and lost my retainer, and was not able to get a new one until a month later, and now my teeth have started to regress to how they were, with quite a prominent gap Does anyone think I would be able to get compensation from my old orthodontist practice or more treatment from them since I was left to my own devices for so long? I should also say that I only recently learned that I should have been following a time pattern to wearing the retainer which would have allowed me to stop wearing it years ago and kept my teeth perfect.

Sorry for how long and badly explained this is!

Sorry I cannot help with your other question, but people are meant to wear their retainers for however long they want their teeth to remain straight. That doesn't mean 24/7 or nightly for life, eventually it will be a couple of nights per week, but really you should never completely stop wearing your retainer after Orthodontic treatment.
