    Self ligating not good

    Hi

I've seen three ortho's in the past few weeks, to help me get my treatment started.

    Ortho 1
Will not use sl brackets. He's used them in the past and had too many problems with the closing bit breaking and said for many patients it caused pain when he had to push them to close them. He also found many patients had hygiene problems under the closing piece. Something he's not found with this donuts, as they are made so they won't attract bacteria.

I found this guy really nice and have no reason to disbelieve him. I've found loads of positive and negative stuff about sl brackets on the web. I've also been back and read a few of the 'designers' websites and now I'm not feeling so desperate to get started, I can see that these sites are heavy advertising and pressure stuff. I'm pleased I've had a few consults and heard a few professional opinions.

    Ortho 2
Will use sl brackets. Problem is the ceramic ones also have metal on them and I don't like that. He said the time frame for them and the non sl (totally ceramic) brackets is the same. He also said that all equipment used with these brackets is the same. Therefore the only difference he gave for choosing one over another, is the look.

    Ortho 3
Will not use sl brackets. He doesn't like the hard sell they do and he said the lies they tell to sell their product are disgraceful.

This was a guy in his 30's, so he's had a few years of experience and has recently bought a share in an ortho business. He's comes well recommended.

    Hi

I've booked second consults with ortho 1 and 3. I've gone totally off the idea of sl brackets, as the more I read the more it feels it's about 'hard sell' and that leaves me feeling cold.

Ortho's 1 and 3 have more personality than ortho 2, who rushed me and didn't answer my questions fully.

I'm hoping to have made my final decision by next Friday!

    Wish me luck. Thanks Adu.

It's great you're happy with your sl brackets. I'm confident that if you have a good ortho and your attitude is positive, it wouldn't matter what brackets the ortho used, as the patient will be happy. Brackets don't move teeth, it's the archwires and ortho's work that does that, plus our teeth play a role, as some people find their teeth move faster than the average 1 mm a month and many move slower.

If teeth need quite a bit of straightening, that's the easy part, and is also the first work done. It's great to see the progress as they straighten, as it is usually fast and easy to see. It's the aligning of the bite and correcting the more mundane stuff that takes the time. Here's to your teeth continuing to progress well!

Good luck with getting an early release date!
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!
