Hi everybody! I'm new here, as you can tell, and I'm getting my Damon system braces on Friday, and I'm actually very happy about it. I don't need to wear them for very long, and I'll finally have my overbite fixed, which has caused me a lot of self-consciousness. Anyway, I do have a few questions though.....
What foods exactly can't I eat? I mean, I know caramel, but what else?
How long does it take to adjust to the braces?
Pain? Is there any?
Will I have a lisp or other speech issues?
And I know this one has probably been asked before, but is it true that you can get hooked together with someone when you kiss and you both have braces?
I sure hope not....
Thanks for taking the time to read this!![]()

Hi Sunset and welcome to this forum!
Honestly you can eat whatever you want, as long as you're careful with chewy, sticky and hard foods. Where I work, we encourage people not to eat foods high in sugar, but instead to look for a more fulling alternative. Some people have the bad habit of chewing ice, and that's a no no, as it's not good for teeth without brackets ... but even worse with brackets. The worst offenders are non food items ... like chewing pens etc.
How long it takes to adjust to braces is individual, but for the majority of people, it seems to be between a few hours and two weeks. Hopefully you'll be within a few hours ... or a few days. Soft foods may help you feel better during this time.
Pain ... another individual experience. I've never had pain, and rarely had any discomfort, but some of the patients I work with, say they've felt pain for an hour or two, but rarely do they experience it for long. We recommend using 'over the counter' pain meds for anyone who finds themself in pain.
Most people do not have any speech issues, unless they have other appliances to get used to. Many people do think there speech changes in minor ways, but most of this appears to be unnoticed by others.
I work with many people who have braces, and have never heard of any of them 'getting hooked' with someone else with braces. I think this is an urban legend, like much of the stuff about pain etc.
All the best for Friday ... have a great day!![]()
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!
Thanks sunny!
