Talking braces in a week or so.

    Hello everyone, I'm Emily.

Obviously, I'm new here, and I've been trying to do some research on the braces I'll be getting within the next few weeks.

I was supposed to get them last July, but the money situation wasn't the best, but I'm only going into my freshmen year of highschool, so I figured it wouldn't be that bad to get them on now. My appointment is monday, and that's the impressions. After the impressions, I'm curious to know if I will then get my braces on. I'm extrememly excited for braces, as to my smile isn't the nicest and I'm looking forward to a straight smile.

Please let me know the steps they'll be taking after my impressions, and what i should expect. What are some things I should look out for, eat, or not eat? Should I take a painkiller before I get them on? Anything helpful would be nice.

I appreciate it, and I'd love to hear from anyone.

Hi Emily! Don't sweat the pain.. it is more minor discomfort than pain. Not sure about Damon Braces, but transitional braces they use bands around your molars and to put these on you have to get spacer to make room for them.. Those are usually the worst part of the treatment but not bad by any means.

You will love the results and your new smile, so don't stress over it...

I recommend you start you blog immediately that way you can track your progress and we can offer you advise and encouragement

Hi Emily and great you're soon to begin your treatment.

The order that things will happen, differs from ortho to ortho. Some have another appointment or two with the patient between taking impressions and starting treatment. This is particularly important to discuss treatment options, so the time this would take is often a case by case thing. Once the impressions are taken, it may take the ortho time to plan treatment, and this will vary from one business to another. The number of patients verses the number of hours the ortho works, is another factor ... and there are many more.

Ask your ortho at your impressions appointment, the timetable of you beginning treatment, as this is the only person who will really know how long it will take.

I personally haven't experienced any pain since my ortho treatment started and only minimal discomfort, nothing that's required pain medication. Other people find there mouth aches after the archwires are placed and the teeth are encouraged to move and find that taking pain meds at this stage help. Again ... ask your ortho what s/he recommends.

Things to be prepared for ... use wax and don't allow the brackets to rub the inside of your mouth. Wax will allow the inside of your mouth to toughen without sores ... and this is the best way for you to continue to feel good. Where I work, adults are allowed to eat any foods they want, using commonsense of course. With younger patients we ask them not to eat foods high in sugar, hard or very chewy. Especially not to chew pencils, pens, figure nails etc.

Your oral hygiene needs to be excellent while having ortho treatment, so be prepared to spend a bit longer during your nightly clean. Flossing once a day with a floss suitable to use with braces, like oral b superfloss, is important for the health of your gums. Interdental brushes are great to clean around brackets and under the archwires and these are things you can be stocking up with now.

Good luck with your treatment being everything you're looking forward to!

    wow!

Thanks for everybody's time to respond back and take the time to read this!
I really do appreciate everybody's posotive encouragment.

As for the spacer situation, I've had a few teeth in the past few years extracted. so before the last molar on each side of my mouth, there is a space. the braces i'm getting are supposed to fix that situationa and bring my teeth together apparently.

Thanks for all the good tips and advice, and I'm almost posotive all of the hard work i put into researching this will pay off in the end.

I'm really hoping I can get them on soon, because as most teenagers DREAD it, i'm actually extrememly excited about it. I mean, why would you NOT be excited about a FLAWLESS smile?!

and I'll be absolutely posotive to keep everyone up to date about how my treatment is going including pictures (even though teeth pictures can be gross). thanks again, everyone!

Welcome Emily and Congrats! You are correct, you will love your end result and braces will be a distant memory soon.

The best thing is to discuss everythng with your ortho, as Sunny stated the treatment differs from ortho to ortho. I could have had everything done in one appointment but I didnt have enough time set aside for that so we did it in two appointments. I didnt really have any pain, just mild discomfort but I took motrin just in case the first night. When My damon brackets were put on, they also put in my archwire too. As of date I have not had any pain.

WAX WAX WAX and not that minty stuff they sell. My ortho always loads me up and I am SO grateful. Also there are tiny little brushes you can get that will help brush I myself use the sonicare and that has worked wonders for me. Some say the Damons will stick out further causing more rubbing on the inside of your mouth but I havent been bothered by it, again all mouths are different . Once you get on the path to your treatment is pretty much smooth sailing.

DO you know if you will be getting the clear brackets??? Im not sure if they come out in july or August or if they are already available. Mine are all metal ad at first I was SHOCKED looking in the mirror and now I dont even give them a second thought. YAY for a gorgeous smile.

    Exclamation first ortho appointment!

so, i just came back from my first ortho appointment!

everyone at the office was extrememly nice, so i'm posotive i'll enjoy it there. my mom is happy with the payment plan, too. they took a few xrays, and told me what the plan was. they decided not to do the records during this appointment, but i have another appointment there to take the records which include impressions, xrays, and that stuff.

we also made an appointment for a full banding, meaning the upper and lower levels of my mouth with have braces all at once. i'll be getting my braces on July 28. I'll have my braces on for about 18-24 months. i'll be getting the damon brackets. im excited!

again, i want to show my appreciation and thanks to everyone here for their support and help!

    Emily

Great your appointment went so well and you and your Mum are happy with your ortho and his team.

Not long till your big day, so make sure you'll well prepared and have some additional toothbrushes, (brush heads for your electric toothbrush if you have one), floss that's designed for use with braces (like oral b superfloss), interdental brushes, toothpicks, a small mirror (for checking your teeth when you're away from a bathroom), wax etc.

Good luck and great you're able to have your treatment while you're so young!

Hi, everybody! It's been awhile since i've put anything on here, or better yet visited the site at all.

if you read up a bit, you'll see my full banding date is the 28. that's two days away! my friends have explained to me that i should have pudding and apple sauce ect. so i went the store today and stocked up. i'm not sure if i should eat as normal as possible, which i would suspect it true, or eat soft foods at first.

im going to take a picture of my teeth now (before the braces), and after i have my braces put on. then, i'll put them both up here to track my progress. I'll be sure to keep up.

I just want to let everybody know my extreme appreciation and gratitude towards everybody on these boards. i've been etremely excited, yet EXTREMEMLY nervous how i'd look with them on. thanks to everybody for the wonderful words of wisdom.

and sunny has helped an awful lot. you're great sunny, thanks!

    Emily

Great that your first day is nearly here Emily!

Where I work, we recommend that our patients return to eating as normally as they can, four hours after they leave our office. The sooner you get back to living life the way you usually do, the sooner you'll realise that having braces is no big deal, and you'll get on with life as you usually do.

Great you're taking photos ... the best type are ... one of each side (so you can track any changes in your profile), one of your upper arch and one of your lower arch. These two photos can be a bit tricky, but really worth the effort. Also a photo of your your bite ... and one of your smile. These are the angles that are great to follow the changes and progress of. Also if you have any particular areas ... like a tooth that's behind all the others, or a large gap or ... something like that, make sure you get some photos of that.

Keep being so positive and excited! Here's to everything going really well!

Good luck Emily! I am guessing you already have your braces put on. I'd like to hear how it has been going for you. I just got them on 2 days ago and the worst day was day #2. Today I got up and it felt better - still sensitive but better.

Sunny - thanks for the tips about the photos. I will be doing this as well.

    Wow.

it's been awhile since i've posted something on here, huh?

well, since then, i've already had my wires changed about 3 times, and i can tell you it's not all that bad. i mean, after the second day i feel fine again. I HAVE NEVER BEEN IN SO MUCH PAIN, THOUGH after i first got them on. OW. it hurt so so bad. my teeth are already perfectly straight. just gapping out right now a bit. i'm sure they'll work it out and close up the gaps soon. i have another ortho appointment in a few days because i missed my last scheduled one due to a vacation. i am very excited to get them off in about a year.

they don't look all that bad, either. that's for sure. they are just shiny. haha.

    bye!
