I am 22 years old and get underbite. I asked 2 orthodontists about correction. First orthodontist said that I should not extract any tooth, becuase the extractions will make my underbite get worse and she suggested that I must use damon 3 system braces (the traditional braces will not work with my case). However I asked another orthodontist for second opinion and the second orthodontist said that I should extract 4 teeth before getting braces because if I don't have extractions the treatment result won't be pretty look (and he said that traditional or damon will give the same result). So what should I do? Thanks for all reply.
The second ortho is correct about brackets being brackets and giving the same result. I recommend you have another one or two consults, as it's important to make sure you make the right decision re extractions.
Extractions are not done a lot anymore, but they're still necessary for some people. The type of bracket used will not affect this, as brackets don't move teeth. If an ortho uses the type of bracket as a reason for you needing or not needing extractions, please check it out and I'd recommend you find a more skilled person, who's not selling a product, but their skill.
Good luck with having further consults.![]()
After 5 years, 11 months and two days of stainless steel brackets ... my teeth now have upper and lower bonded, gold wire, retainers and removable clear retainers!
i'm getting damon braces and i really was hoping not to get extractions. but the ortho told me he still recommends the extractions :-/. i already went to 4 different orthos and they all said the same thing. My ortho said he can try it first without the extractions if i really want to, but that i might not like the end result. I saw some severe crowded cases of people on line and they didn't require extractions with damon. But i still do :-(. what do u suggest sunny?
hdz remember it has nothing to do with the brand of the bracket ... that's just an advertising gimmick. It's about the size of your jaw bone, the number of your teeth and the size of your teeth. If you have more teeth, or less arch ... then the only way that your teeth can be straightened is by extractions.
If you're still unsure, continue to have consults.
Good luck!![]()

hi there,
Just to say that when I had my Damon's fitted by dentist suggested extractions for purely asthetic reasons. I decided not to have the extractions but carried on with the braces. That was last April, my treatment is almost done (wonderful dentist!) and we've decided to have the extractions now because I'm not happy with the result so there are always options, your dentist should always let you make the final decision but if you're worried, like I was, then you can always see how it goes and mybe have the extractions later on!![]()
That's some great advice Snowflake, but ... for most people, leaving extractions to the end can be like having to begin the treatment all over again. The archwire will be aligning all the teeth from day one of your treatment, and then when a gap has to be filled, all teeth need realigning.
Take the advice of the ortho you chose and if you're not able to trust the ortho you're talking to, then consult futher.

Hi Sunny,
I agree that for most people extracting teeth at the end will not be ideal but not all ortho's will make you aware that this is possible and if you are nervous about the effect of extractions, as I was, it is possible to have the extractions at the end of the straighening process. My teeth will now only need moving back as all rotation has been done, the archwire used is not the same as used as when aligning the teeth, as this has already been achieved!
Hdz, like Sunny I hope that you find an Ortho that you can trust and who will work with you during your treatment! Good Luck.
Sunny, your continued advice is a huge assett on this board and give a lot of reassurance! Many Thanks.
Hi there, this is the first time I reply on this forum. I am 28 and about to go on a braces journey. all the orthodontist I had seen before had advised me to extract 3 premolars (I had one extracted when I was 9) and I wasn't very keen on extracting healthy teeth, so my research led me to the damon system.
The ortho I went to now uses damon and he told me that he would only decide wether or not to extract after seing my x-rays. when he did he said i would only need IPR in my back tooth. He explained everything really well and the prices he told me where within my expectations. I know everybody says we should look for more than one opinion, do you think I should? thank you!
Maddie it's always best to have more than one opinion, mostly due to the different approaches we all take to treating teeth.
Good luck!

Hi thereI am 15 years old and wearing Damon System. It's the new one, my ortho said they are called Damon Quantum. Okay, so talking about teeth extractions here, I actually needed 4 teeth extracted. Regardless with Damon. Damon System promises to treat MOST treatment without extractions, not all. So I guess I'm not so luck :P I got 4 bicuspids out,the one behind ur canines. They took 2 out at a time. They say that if I dont have them out, by the time my second set of wisdom teeth grow out, my teeth will be crooked cuz it's just too full, and my teeth are quite big. I cried when I first heard xD and I cried when I first got them out, getting the second set out in a couple of days. They injected something, but the dentist shot me 3 times on each tooth xP I've been scared of needles and dentists since I was a kid, that's why I cried. When they start pulling, i could feel them tugging, but I honestly can not feel my tooth coming out, at some point the dentist just said "they're out"

I am 15 and wearing damon now. I needed 4 teeth extracted !! so no worries, the ortho just asked for an x-ray of my teeth, and he saw that my first set of wisdom teeth are really big, so he assumed my second set will be as big, and he told me that he needed my bicuspids out, the ones behind the canines, cuz if i dont, by the time my second set of wisdom teeth grow out *regardless my teeth will be aligned by then* my teeth are gonna be crooked, and I do not want buck tooth, what's the point of having braces in the first place then xP dont worry, i needed extractions too ! we're just, one of the odds xD
