    no spacers?

I was told my orthodontist will not be using spacers before I get my Damon braces. This is a-ok with me, but leaves me wondering:

Why do some ortho's choose not to use spacer / put metal bands around the back molars?

Will my Ortho have some other way to "shore up" the braces?

    regards, Jude

Hi Jude ... no spacers is now common practise. Where I work, we don't use molar bands, only buccal molar brackets ... which means no spacers. Some ortho's still prefer to use bands around the molars, but most are not doing this any more.

    Good luck!

I asked a similar question in another thread: Don't they still have to use molar bands on teeth with metal crowns (like mine)? Or, is there some special, super-glue they can use that will adhere well to metal crowns?

Cathy as long as they have the bonding that's necessary, buccal molar brackets can be used.

I have large fillings in my molars as a result of the type of 'school dental care' that was carried out when I was a child in New Zealand. The brackets fix fine to these ... but a different bonding is used to the one that's attaching brackets to my enamel. We also use different bonding when attaching brackets to other types of dental work. It does mean having to have more products available, and I suspect that's why some places don't do all this, as this also means extra $$$ to our business.
