    damon braces and spacers?

hello~ new to this forum and new to braces.

i'm scheduled to get damon braces on 12/10/2011, and had a question - mainly because i'm in so much pain from spacers. i went in for the impressions and spacers on 12/01, and that's when they confirmed with me i'll be putting damon system in. and from my research on the web, it seemed like damon system didn't use molar rings for anchorage. 1) did i research correctly? and if damon system does not use molar rings... then why do i need spacers??

the assistant who was putting spacers in did mention that the space between my molars are very very tight. in one of them, she actually nicked my upper palate trying to get the seps in, which at that point she apologized and ended up putting a metal separator in, instead of the small circular rubber bands. maybe it's because the space is so tight, but i'm in much pain right now. i've tried taking advil and tylenol but it didn't do anything, so for the first two days after getting spacers in, i ended up taking left-over Norco (prescribed pain medication) from my wisdom teeth extraction (which was pulled 10 days before the impression appointment w/ ortho). seriously, the pain from the spacers is much greater than the pain from the wisdom teeth exaction, which is another thing i don't quite get..

From what I've seen on the forum, some orthos like to use molar bands and some like to use regular brackets. Only 5 more days to go! I know it sucks, but you can get through it. There are a lot of uncomfortable phases that happens during braces treatment.

If any orthodontist use expander/spacer, or wanna do slenderizing/ipr, or tells you your case can’t be fixed by Damon, then they’re not really using Damon technology.

I think this is a very good product but obviously the company fails to educate the Orthodontics/Orthodontology colleges, and some orthodontists listed on Damon web site as the Damon brace provider are not really practice the technology, if patients didn’t do some study & research before they visit the orthodontist, they’ll believe what those fake Damon Brace provider tell them, and that ruin the reputation of Damon system, and the worst, the patients’ teeth got ruined in the long term. So I think Damon company need to be careful on how they certify the Damon doctors.

My son got some crowed & pop-up teeth, I’ve searched Damon system web sites w/ zip code 20841, & I visited all the orthodontists listed, Dr. Dillon is the only one truly practice Damon technology, not like those old school or fake Damon orthodontists asking me to choose between elastic ligature (rubber bands) and self-legating brackets, telling me the self-legating brackets cost $500 more and it’s just for easy cleaning, but Dr. Dillon only uses self-legating brackets. We visited 11 orthodontists before we decide to go w/ Dr. Dillon, all other orthodontists told me my son’s case can’t be fixed using Damon system, and they wanna use molar rings for anchorage and expander then extract 2 or 4 teeth w/ slenderizing/inter proximal reduction (ipr) some teeth…go figure

I think Damon Brace Company really need to emphasize a simple but very important thing, yet it still takes me some thinking to realize, old school traditional brace can only fix one kind of condition, which is a lot space between teeth, probably most orthodontists can fix this kind problem by pulling the teeth together, but w/ crowed teeth, old school orthodontists just extract some teeth to make the case like lots space between teeth. But Damon can fix the problem by using self-legating brackets w/ titanium memory-wire & some tiny coil springs to create space needed, no need of horrible-looking expander or spacer e.g. molar rings for anchorage.

The whole purpose of Damon system is to avoiding extracting or slenderizing teeth; and what’s bad about extracting or slenderizing healthy teeth, if you go check the statistic data of 10 years long term effect, you’ll realize why its bad to mess w/ the genuine and nature design.

This is what Damon can achieve Timonium, MD (Maryland) Orthodontist Thomas Barron, DMD, PA, but I never visit this orthodontist, kind too far for me.

This is what Damon can do Damon® System | Washington DC Gaithersburg MD | K Street Dental & Orthodontic Group, however when I visited this orthodontist, I found he’s a big liar, he’s nowhere near a Damon technology provider at all.

jsnlee, unfortunately life isn't that simple. If all it took to be an orthodontist was following what one company tells you to do, it would be one hell of an easy job.

A good orthodontist is an artist - he will take what he needs from one system, and something from another, and put together something individual and unique to suit each particular client's needs. A professional knows how to choose from the entire array of research and findings in orthodontics to create something to suit a particular patient. S/he is not just following a rule book produced by one manufacturing company. (Sigh.)

If you think that 'slenderising' healthy teeth is bad, what do you propose is done to fix black triangles which occur when previously crowded teeth are straightened? The only 2 solutions are to use IPR or bonding. The Damon system is not magic.

My ortho used regular brackets on all my teeth but unfortunately the Damon bracket wasn't sufficient to straighten my partially impacted wisdom tooth. He felt that this tooth needed more leverage to straighten it, and that a molar band would provide better leverage. It worked and I now have a disimpacted wisdom tooth. This did not work with the Damon system. It needed a professional experienced with using a variety of methods and procedures to perceive the exact situation he was confronted with and to come up with a creative solution which would work.

Our teeth have not read the Damon brochure.
Bonded retainers fitted upper and lower & braces removed at 19 months 2 weeks.

    Braces were:

    In-Ovation C on the top
    Damon on the bottom

Do you have fillings? My ortho also tried to put a band because two of my molars have big fillings and he told me he was afraid of the brackets will fall off as brackets can't be glued to filling surface very well. But because of the shape of my teeth, he couldn't get band fit well so eventually he used some other kind of brackets on the two teeth with big fillings. Not sure this is your case but just give your some information.

I agree with you. As a side note jsnlee - I did a lot of reasearch before getting my 4 pre-molars removed because of crowding and found no credible reasearch to suggest issues 10 years down the road, in fact most of the reasearch and almost eveyone I have talked to are glad they went through with it. Those didn't go through with it saw their teeth revert back to crowding after the braces were off because they didn't have the room OR their teeth were misshaped in some way (like tipping outwards for example) because again there was not enough room. I have an expander, so other meathods were used to give me more room and i still needed teeth removed. Now I have a beatuiful smile and no "sunken in" features that people threaten is going to happen.

Sorry for hijacking the thread a bit, just had to put my two cents worth in about removing teeth.
