New braces and a new job...bad idea?

Hi there, so I am on my final countdown to get my Damon clear put on (Jan4th). I just received a promotion over Christmas week and I will be heading to my company headquarters the night of the 4th (I work from home and live about 4 hrs away from the office). I am conflicted on whether I should delay getting my braces put on due to the fact that my new job starts the next day. The majority of Jan will be traveling back and forth from headquarters to home for training. Is getting my braces on the day before the job starts too much? I am concerned about pain and concentrating, being natural in front of my new bosses, sponsored luncheons/events...I am just not sure if the adjustment phase is too much to handle during another adjustment phase of the new job and meeting new team members and such. Part of me just wants to do it, get it over with, and deal with the discomfort by supplementing with pain killers and such...but a small part of me is considering cancelling my apt and rescheduling for after training.

    Any advice?

If you are only going to reschedule and put it off for a couple weeks or months, I say go for that. But it is just a matter of personal preferance. For me, I needed extractions as well, so I have been getting used to that... and of course, that messed up my speech. But if you're not getting extractions, I would say it's not that big of a deal. They are awkward at first, especially eating in front of people. I had to chew with my mouth open for a while and still do... so, if your training is going to consist of group lunches etc... maybe putting it off for a couple weeks wouldnt be so bad. I had a banquet 5 days after getting braces on, and I was so embarrassed because I couldnt eat my requested chicken plate... I had to ask for soup! LOL

I was going to say if your concern is just self-consciousness, go for it now and don't delay.

But I think you make some good points ... You're in a new job ... the first impressions are important. You're undergoing training. You are going to be nervous ... so I think those are good reasons for putting it off ... But you know what? ... this is just crazy me: sometimes when I'm entering a new or stressful situation, it's actually helpful to have a "distraction." ... It actually relaxes me and gives my worry something to concentrate on ....

I'm scheduled myself for January 4th .... I am a teacher, and I start the new term the following week. I assume I'll be in some pain during the first week of school. But I'm not taking on a new job with new people and new responsibilities ...

    Good luck ...

So, what did you end up doing?

Hey there! I did it. I decided to just bite the bullet and get it done. I will blog more about it when I get a chance, I have been at a conference since I got my braces on on Wed. Good news, I'm glad I did, I have had zero pain or discomfort. I will go in to more detail in my blog.
