Default deviated jaw

Hi everyone!

Wondering if any of you have deviated jaws... or have had your jaw realigned by braces.

My jaw is deviated, and i've been told it has a lot to do with the way my teeth are. But i've been told i have condylar hyperplasia as well. So it's confusing for me... i don't really know if it would be safe to straighten my teeth and re-position my lower jaw a lil' bit with just braces, i'm afraid it will mess up my jaw joints. I have an appointment with an ortho and specialist on saturday, they'll have analyzed my x-rays by then. I can't wait to hear what they have to say....

Have any of you had problems with your jaw joints after braces? or feeling anything weird going on with them while in treatment?

Stories from real people would help me out a lot... thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, braces only work on the teeth - if there is an underlying issue with the jaw bones, that can only be corrected with orthognathic surgery. That said, sometimes a mild skeletal issue can be disguised orthodontically. You're doing exactly the righth thing to consult with a professional - in fact it might not be a bad idea in a case like this to seek more than one opinion. And one thing that you'll want them to look at is the issue of whether the growth has now ceased.

Thanks Zoso. I really think it's stopped growing... i'm 26, so, i think i've grown as fas as i'm going to go. And yeah... i'm planning on getting 2 or 3 different opinions. This is a huge deal for me, i don't want to rush into anything or just believe what the first doctor tells me.
